I did do peritoneal dialysis on fashion the cardiac medical unit which I will include in my job description. Civil? Please advise how to open the door into a new arena of fashion, nursing. Thank you so very kindly, El. Towne. Thanks for the question! Most Dialysis positions require experience in rear window an acute care setting, which you have, so thats a great start. You also have some relative experience in the field. You might consider obtaining a Certified Nephrology Nurse certification as many employers prefer candidates with that certification. Next, you might consider inquiring with the larger private Dialysis services, Davita and Fresenius.

The ratings for these employers on Glass Door and Indeed are just so-so, but they might be a great way to get 1 to 2 years of experience in essay the specialty before searching for a more desirable hospital based position. Essay And Gattaca,? The private Dialysis operators tend to a bit more welcoming to candidates without experience. That said, the job market for RNs is very hot in 2016, so your chances should be better with all employers. I hope this helps! What about for a second career new nurse? I have over seven years of experience in the communications field with three years of supervisory experience. I recently graduated with my BSN and passed the NCLEX. Essay? My nursing experience is limited to my clinical experience and some volunteer work. I am struggling how to stereotypical, relate my past experience with nursing to make me stand out in my Summary. Yes, its difficult to relate experiences in fashion other industries to nursing because employers are typically seeking candidates with experience in the technical aspects of nursing. That said, you can certainly highlight the general aspects of jack, your former career.

Your promotion, leadership, team-work and other aspects are all good qualifications to address in essay your summary. Also, here is an article on new-grad nursing resumes that might be helpful. I hope this information helps! What would you write as a nursing student looking to start applying for jobs? I have no experience other than what my clinicals have offered me. I wont be taking my boards for about 5 months still. Why Athletes Go Broke? Set to graduate in fashion essay December (3 more months.

How would you suggest is the best way to present that as a RN, I simultaneously held the stereotypical blacks titles of ADON, Wound Nurse, and Charge Nurse at my most recent employer? Initially I was hired as a Charge Nurse, then I was promoted to ADON but I still had to fashion essay, work as a Charge Nurse 3 of my 5 scheduled days so I functioned in the role of ADON only on Monday and Tuesday. Later it was determined there was a definite need for consistent and routine wound monitoring, so I evolved into disobedience the Wound Nurse for the facility. Working with physicians I developed new protocols for wound assessment, treatment, and fashion management and every Monday I functioned in the role of Wound Nurse. Window Characters? Is it best to fashion essay, break each job into its own summary and bullet list?

Im in by northwest theme over my head trying to figure out the fashion essay best way to present myself in a resume now, including the Essay and Gattaca, Niccol profile. Thanks for the inquiry. Fashion Essay? This is a great problem to sea wolf jack, have for your nursing resume! I agree its difficult to manage though. Fashion? Typically, when people have multiple roles with the same employer, theyre not simultaneous so they can be listed separately according the time-frame they were performed. In this case, I think it would be best to do as you suggest and break each into Go Broke its own summary and bullet list. The reason is that these are all very different roles. Essay? Something like below: Employer information (location, details, etc.) Job Title: Charge RN, ADON, Wound Care Nurse.

Hired as a Charge RN, I was promoted to on 1984, by George Niccol, ADON and also accepted a role as the fashion Wound Care Nurse for the facility. Charge RN: Start Date-End Date. Wound Care Nurse: Start Date-End Date. I think something like that works well in this case. It might take up quite a bit of on 1984, by George Orwell and Gattaca, by Andrew Niccol, space, but youve accomplished a lot! As always, be sure to tailor your resume to the position applied for and highlight quantifiable and tangible achievements where possible. As for fashion, your resume summary, I think its best say something like, X years experience as Charge Nurse, X years experience as an ADON, and X years as a Wound Care Nurse. And/or, Leadership and teamwork skills recognized by current employer with promotions and special assignments. Remember, the theme summary itself is just that, a quick summary designed to pique interest and get the reader to spend more time reviewing the rest of the resume and fashion the actual accomplishments. Its also an excellent opportunity to Go Broke Essay, match your qualifications with the required qualifications for the job. So, if the job is looking for X years experience as an fashion essay ADON, then you might say, Over X years experience as an ADON. I hope this information helps and please let me know if you have further questions or concerns.

When listed awards won with previous employers, is it alright to add awards you were nominated for but did not receive? Great Question! Like many things related to stereotypical, resumes, you will find some people who say yes and others who say no. I would say that it depends on how well you can quantify the nomination. For example: One of five Staff Nurses out of 160 to essay, be nominated for the X Award.

Quantifying it this way, indicates that it was an honor just to be nominated. By Northwest Theme? If youre able to do this, or something like it, then adding the fashion essay nomination to by northwest theme, your resume could be useful. I hope this helps!! Thank you. Two more questions, after my name is appropriate to include credentials or no? I have seen differing opinions. My university awards a BS not a BSN, so my credentials will be BS, RN. Will this throw recruiters off since most are looking specifically for a BSN or will the supporting information under education provide enough information? Thats a tough one.

Im not sure that I have seen a BS instead of a BSN. To be honest, I dont think recruiters are that picky, so it should be fine to include your credentials as BS, RN. Fashion? The vast majority of recruiters are more concerned with making sure you have the required work experience. That said, if youre a new grad, it shouldnt matter either. Like youve already noticed though, there are many different opinions on resumes.

I typically encourage people to include the credentials after their name and I think your situation is no different.

This ten percent of all sulfur dioxide emission comes from volcanoes, sea spray, plankton, and rotting vegetation.

The other chemical that is fashion, also chiefly responsible for the make-up of acid rain is nitrogen oxide. Oxides of nitrogen is a term used to describe any compound of nitrogen with any amount of oxygen atoms. Nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide are all oxides of window characters nitrogen. These gases are by-products of firing processes of extreme high temperatures (automobiles, utility plants), and in chemical industries (fertilizer production). Natural processes such as bacterial action in soil, forest fires, volcanic action, and lightning make up five percent of nitrogen oxide emission. It has been estimated that acid rain causes $1 billion worth of damage in Canada every year. Thousands of lakes have been damaged; a large part of the salmon habitat in the Maritimes has been lost; a significant proportion of eastern Canada's forests has been affected; and considerable damage to buildings and monuments has been documented.

The Canadian Council of Resource and Environment Ministers in established 20 kg/hectare per essay year as the target for Canadian sulfur dioxide loading. In eastern Canada, 96% of the land with high capability for jack london, forestry is subject to acidic deposition in excess of 20 kg/ha per essay year. In recent years, important instances of dieback and declines in growth rate have been noted in stereotypical sugar maple groves in parts of Canada that receive high levels of fashion these and other air pollutants, such as ozone. Significant growth declines in northern Ontario forests, most notable over the past 30 years, coincide with a period of rapidly increasing industrialization and urbanization across much of the province. About 40% of nitrogen oxides come from transportation (cars, trucks, buses, trains), and 25% from thermoelectric generating stations, and the balance from other industrial, commercial, and residential combustion processes. More 80% of all Canadians live in areas with high acid rain-related pollution levels.

Transportation makes up 43 percent, and rear window characters 32 percent belongs to industrial combustion. The interactions between living organisms and the chemistry of their aquatic habitats are extremely complex. If the number of one species or group of species changes in response to acidification, then the ecosystem of the entire water body is likely to be affected through the predator-prey relationships of the food web. At first, the effects of acid deposition may be almost imperceptible, but as acidity increases, more and fashion more species of plants and animals decline or disappear. As the Essay by George Orwell and Gattaca, by Andrew, water pH approaches 6.0, crustaceans, insects, and some plankton species begin to disappear.

As pH approaches 5.0, major changes in fashion the makeup of the plankton community occur, less desirable species of mosses and plankton may begin to invade, and the progressive loss of some fish populations is likely, with the more highly valued species being generally the least tolerant of acidity. Below pH of 5.0, the water is largely devoid of fish, the bottom is covered with undecayed material, and the near shore areas may be dominated by mosses. Terrestrial animals dependent on aquatic ecosystems are also affected. Waterfowl, for example, depend on aquatic organisms for nourishment and nutrients. As these food sources are reduced or eliminated, the quality of habitat declines and the reproductive success of the birds is affected. Who Wrote! The precipitation of Mercury that is rising in lakes -a horrible toxic to the ecosystem. Fashion Essay! THE LEVEL OF MERCURY IN FISH Nine commonly-consumed fish types and their average mercury concentrations in micrograms/gram wet weight (parts per who wrote civil million) Acid-Rain in the forest and beyond. By: Brittney McKenzie.

Everybody has heard of essay Acid-Rain, everybody knows what it is, but everybody doesn't know what Acid-Rain does. Acid-Rain has effects that just doesn't effect one place in the forest but it effects most of the forest. When you see damage that Acid-Rain does you would most likely see it in water environments such as streams, lakes, and small pounds. When Acid-Rain falls it flows through the on 1984, by Andrew, streams, lakes, and small pounds right after it hits the forest, fields, buildings, and roads. But only sometimes Acid-Rain can fall directly in the water. When Acid-Rain falls more and more different types of fish and other aquatic plants and animals that live in theses waters decrease by the day. week. Essay! year. Because Acid-Rain causes the loss of acid-sensitive plants and Essay on 1984, Niccol animals, and fashion essay fish that rely on these organisms for food may also be affected. So just by Acid-Rain falling into water that is window, some of the fashion, things that Acid-Rain can do but there is a lot more. When Acid-Rain comes down it hits the plants and kills the plants being unable to north grow back. The soil will dry up and stay hard until it is watered if this continues then there will be no more plants on Earth and if there is no more plants on Earth then all humans will die because plants have air and without air people will die. Acid-Rain can effect not only water and water environments but it can effect land.

Acid-Rain organisms on land can be very bad because when it is cold the Acid-Rain fall onto essay, the street and freezes up. When it freezes it becomes ice and can cause many car accidents that leads up to deaths. When Acid-Rains falls it kills animals homes all at the same time leaving nothing but broken trees and hard soil. As a result of their homes being near the water environments their food that comes from the water will most likely to harder to get because the population would be decreasing. People help with Acid-Rain in away because we pollute the air with our cars and jack other things that give off gas and Acid-Rain pollutes the air as it come down so nature and humans are polluting the fashion, air. Acid- Rain do not effect just water environments and by northwest land but one of the serious side effects of acid rain on human is respiratory problems. The dioxide and nitrogen oxide emission gives risk to respiratory problems such as dry coughs, asthma, headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritation. Polluted rainfall is especially harmful to fashion those who suffer from asthma or those who have a hard time breathing. But even healthy people can have their lungs damaged by acid air and north theme rain. Acid rain can aggravate a person's ability to breathe and may increase disease which could lead to death. The United States provide a glimpse of such costs.

That acid precipitation destroys, overall, $13,000 million annually in the eastern part of the nation and could cause $1,750 million yearly in forest damage, $8,300 million in fashion crop damage in the Ohio River basin alone by about the north, year 2000 and $40 million in essay health costs in the State of Minnesota. Who Wrote Disobedience! The only cost-effective solution to the problem, according to many people, is to reduce emissions at their point of origin. Anyone investigating acid rain should update these figures. In conclusion, all these things kills off the forest in so many different ways if it is not by Acid-Rain then it is by fashion essay cars. When we do things we are killing our self.

So Acid-Rain can kill things that we need so know everybody knows about what it and everybody has heard of it and everybody knows what it does now. What kind of destruction can/does acid rain cause? The corrosive effects of acidic waters on man-made items are widely known. On the other hand, we only can speak mostly in generalities when discussing the effects of acid-rain on natural environments. The short-term danger from acid rain is mostly to forest and lake ecosystems, which are very sensitive to chemical imbalances in Why Athletes Essay their environment. With the loss of these ecosystems that effectively moderate the pH of essay surface run-off water in many areas, the effect of acid rain on local water supplies could become more pronounced in by George and Gattaca, the future.

Where does the pollutant that forms acid rain come from? How is acid rain formed? Acid rain forms when molecules of oxidized sulfur and/or nitrogen in fashion the atmosphere combine with water, forming acidic compounds that dissolve in the water that becomes rain. Typical sulfur compounds (SO2 and SO3) get into by northwest, the atmosphere from both natural (i.e. volcanoes, windblown dust containing gypsum-which has SO4 ions in it, etc..) and non-natural (i.e., burning of coal, refining of metal ores) sources. Nitrogen compounds also get into the atmosphere and form acids, although the natural sources are much more limited. The biggest non-natural source is burning fossil fuels, especially gasoline.

What kind of destruction can/does acid rain cause? The corrosive effects of acidic waters on man-made items are widely known. This picture shows the total effects of a factory polluting the air through these steps: 2.) Dry deposition from the smoke falls into the lake. 3.) The rest of the smoke rises up and forms acid rain in the atmosphere (see Acid Rain Formation http://www.angelfire.com/ks3/acidrainreport/formation2.html) 5.) Acid rain falls on a forest and acid snow falls on a mountain 6.) After all this, the lake is Essay on 1984, Orwell and Gattaca, by Andrew, affected, the river is affected, the soil is affected and the vegetation is affected. Dr. Ken Rubin, Asst. Professor. Department of Geology and Geophysics.

University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI 96822W. Conclusion on fashion essay, Acid Rain And Automobiles. In conclusion, the two primary sources of acid rain is sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Automobiles are the main source of disobedience nitrogen oxide emissions, and utility factories are the main source for fashion essay, sulfur dioxide emissions. These gases evaporate into disobedience, the atmosphere and then oxidized in clouds to form nitric or nitrous acid and sulfuric acid. Essay! When these acids fall back to the earth they do not cause damage to just the environment but also to human health. Acid rain kills plant life and stereotypical destroys life in lakes and fashion ponds.

The pollutants in sea wolf jack acid rain causes problem in human respiratory systems. Fashion Essay! The pollutants attack humans indirectly through the foods they consumed. They effected human health directly when humans inhale the pollutants. Governments have passed laws to reduce emissions of sea wolf sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, but it is no use unless people start to work together in stopping the release of these pollutants. If the acid rain destroys our environment, eventually it will destroy us as well. Acid Rain And The Social Impact. The causes, effects, and how to prevent the amounts of acid rain is completely up to the human race. The cause of fashion essay acid rain is simple. Its the london, humans and their constant quest for fashion essay, the cheapest most efficient way to do things. We want skyscrapers to work in, electricity to give us light and cars to get us from point A to point B. The gases such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen monoxide, and civil disobedience nitrogen dioxide are created from the production of fashion steel and iron, utility factories and crude oil processing. The smelting of metal sulfate ore produces pure metal.

This causes the release of civil disobedience sulfur dioxide. Metals such as zinc, nickel and copper are obtained by this process. There is fashion essay, cost efficient ways to obtain these things and then there is cleaner ways which are better for on 1984, by Andrew, our environment. Of course the manufacturers are going to want to use the less costly. Their greed and their constant quest to have more and more is what seems to be the first area of fashion essay concern to them. One can only have so much, then what is there?

Ill tell you what there isnt and thats satisfaction. We the people really dont need more than what we use. Yet there is constant over indulgence in our society. Give me more and Why Athletes Essay more and dont forget to give it to me for free. The problem lies within the consumer as much as it does the producer.

Essay: Greek mythology compared to essay, nordic mythology. This paper will outline an exploration between Greek mythology to Go Broke, Nordic mythology, and how similar or different they are from essay, each other. Furthermore it will outline the basic origin of the sea wolf jack london, two mythologies. Each paragraph will cover a specific character or characteristic of the two mythologies and then compared and fashion essay contrasted between Odin VS zeus, creation it is on 1984, by George by Andrew Niccol presented with the relevant concepts defined and processes clarified. The Greek mythology compared to Nordic mythology view of creation is provided, wherein key terms are clarified and fashion essay the mythologies are defined. The aim is to provide an overview of Greek mythology and Nordic mythology perception, upon which an understanding of mythology and their impact and how it is viewed in london modern day in pop culture can be clarified. Myths can be looked at in many ways, which often can be employed at fashion the same time without contradiction. For example, in the story of Why Athletes Go Broke Ra, Isis, and the snakebite, the possible political interpretation (Isis being advanced by her priests to position of top god) doesnt rule out essay a consideration of Ra as sun-god, or possibly seeing some ritual significance to his sickness and Essay on 1984, by George Orwell by Andrew subsequent cure. Essay! As G. S. North Theme! Kirk puts it, a myth may have different emphases or levels of meaning. Since it often serves more than one purpose, a tale about human actions can contain more than a single aspect and implication (39). If we are to compare two different mythologies it is important that we know exactly what we mean when we write mythology. As we understand it, the word myth was derived from the fashion essay, Greek word mythos.

In this text the word myth is a story of london forgotten or vague origin which is supernatural or religious. A story was made up to explain or rationalize one or more aspects of the world. Fashion Essay! It is also important to remember that these myths that are given as examples in this document have at some point been believed to be true by the people in the societies that used or originated them. Therefore it is clearly separated from the everyday speech meaning of the word myth, which mostly refers to stereotypical, an imaginary story (Brandenberg, 1994). The Romans copied their mythology from the Greeks; therefore we will only mention the Greek creation myth in this text.

To be able to explain the differences and similarities between the Norse and the Greek creation myths Ill begin with a short presentation of the two myths, which both begin with nothing. The world is nothing but a dark and void place (Brandenberg, 1994). In the Greek Creation Myth, in the darkness of the Greek creation myth there is essay a bird with black wings. This bird is making a golden egg from which the God of Love is coming. Rear! One of the shells from the essay, egg becomes the sky, which is also called Uranus, while the other shell becomes the earth, Gaia (Brandenberg, 1994).Later on there is a fight between the God of Loves child and grandchildren. The child of the north by northwest, God of Love had heard from the Oracle that his son should eat him up so when his son Zeus was a little boy his father instead ate him up(Brandenberg, 1994).Trying to run away from his fate, he is fashion punished and at least Zeus and his brothers win against their father. Zeus has two sons who have one responsibility each. One of them, Prometheus, should create mankind and the other, Epimetheus, should create the animals. They should also give their creations one gift. The animals received one gift each, and nothing was left for the human, so Prometheus gave them fire.

Because fire was only meant for the Gods, Zeus became angry and had to punish Prometheus and mankind. When Epimetheus married Pandora they were given a lot of gifts from the other Gods. There was one special gift, called Pandoras Box, which they were not allowed to characters, open but off course they could not resist the temptation. Fashion! Opening the box they had suddenly let all the rear characters, pain, sickness and envy out to the world. There was nothing they could do to stop it. Later on they heard a sound, like let me out, from the essay, box.

They opened the rear window, box one more time and out flew all hope (Brandenberg, 1994). The Norse Creation Myth begins, with nothing but dark chaos. This nothing, called Ginnungagap, is placed south of Nieflheim, where there is only ice and north of Muspelheim where there is essay nothing but glowing embers (Greek and Roman 2003). In Ginnungagap the ice from Nieflheim and the parks from who wrote disobedience, Muspelheim meet and fashion create an evil giant called Ymir. When Ymir is completed the ice and the sparks also create a cow, which is good. The cow feeds the giant Ymir, and itself is licking blocks of ice. One day when it is licking a huge ice block the god of Love, Bure, comes out of it. Why Athletes Go Broke Essay! (Greek and Roman 2003) Later on Bures offspring has a struggle against Ymir and the other giants. Ymir dies and the gods threw him into Ginnungagap where his flesh becomes the earth, his blood the seas, his bones the mountains and so on. The dwarves and the dark elves in fashion essay the Norse mythology are created of the stereotypical blacks, maggots from essay, Ymirs flesh. (Cook, 1914) When some of the Go Broke, gods are walking on a shore they see two tree trunks and fashion give them souls, motions and north by northwest theme senses. These become the two first humans, Ask and Embla. (Greek and Roman 2003)

In the Norse creation story the world was made from an evil giant (Greek and Roman 2003), while the world in the Greek creation story was made from an essay egg (Brandenberg, 1994).The Greek people looked at the world in a different way. Maybe they thought the world was more fragile than the by northwest theme, Norse people did. Fighting against nature more than the Greek people did, the fashion, Norse people experienced the Essay Orwell by Andrew, negative and hard things, like darkness and coldness, in nature. Fashion Essay! In both stories there was a struggle between a god, who later on would be the ruler of the other gods, and someone else. In the disobedience, Greek creation story, Zeus fought against his father (Brandenberg, 1994) while Odin fought against the giant, Ymir. The ruler of the gods had to show everyone that they were good and brave enough to be the leaders. Then the other gods and the humans could respect and fashion trust them. It is also very interesting to draw parallels to Oedipus and sea wolf Beowulf (Curtius and Robert 1963). Beowulf had to give his life to show his people that he was their right king.

A king could never be afraid of death nor to struggle. Oedipus did not have to essay, struggle physically, but instead he solved a riddle and that way he saved the people. Who Wrote Civil Disobedience! Not solving the riddle he would never have become the king. The idea fate was very important for essay both the Norse and the Greek people, but knowing their fates, they acted in window completely different ways. Fashion! The Greeks always tried to run away from their fate (Curtius and Robert 1963). In the Greek creation story, one might have noticed that Zeus father ate Zeus so that the fate would not be fulfilled, but you can again draw a parallel to Oedipus (Curtius and blacks Robert 1963), which is a story based on running away from fates. In Norse mythology they instead prepared themselves to meet fates .The Greek gods punished the people with the fashion essay, opening of Pandoras Box. Here it is easy to draw a parallel to the Christian religion, which also lets the people live with a sin (Curtius and Robert 1963). In the Norse creation story, there is who wrote nothing about fashion, punishing or living with a sin. The Greek people were more often punished because they always ran away from their fates, something that the Norse people never did.

Instead there is nothing about hope in the Norse creation story, compared to the Greek creation story where a bird flew out of Pandoras Box with hope (Brandenberg, 1994).When you have been punished you need something to believe in, you need hope. In Norse mythology there are a lot of elves and witches compared to who wrote disobedience, the Greek mythology (Curtius and Robert 1963). What could the reason be? Those imaginations about witches and fashion essay elves are much easier to have when you are living in sea wolf jack a cold country with a lot of dark forests. Perhaps the Norse people had even more stories and thoughts about the elves before the Norse mythology came and fashion when it did come, they involved them in the new mythology/religion. Here one can draw a parallel to the Christening of the Norse people. When Christianity came to the north, the people tried to involve their old rituals in the new religion. It is easier to accept the new things if you are allowed to keep the old ones. To further emphasise that the Greek and Norse mythologies are connected to each other we have also studied some words, which have travelled through languages and time.

Urd, which means Fate is related to rear window characters, the old English word wyrd , which originally meant Fate too. Today we have the fashion essay, word left as the Weird Sisters. First I thought it meant strange sisters, but after research I found out about the real meaning. They are the three sisters of Destiny, which play a big part in characters Shakespeares Macbeth. (Curtius and essay Robert 1963) In Greece Odeion was the name of a sort of a construction, which was often used as a theatre. Maybe the Romans used this word too and the Vikings heard it, interpreted it their own way and north by northwest named their main God with a similar name (Odin).

Lots of names may have been travelling around like this. Today the English word odeum means the same thing as the Greek word odeion. If words have travelled from one place from another, the stories and culture might just as well have travelled the same way. This indicates that Norse mythology could have lots of influence from Greek and Roman mythology. Norse mythology is the fashion essay, religion of the Norse people. The Norse people are the ancient people of northern Europe (Scandinavia, Iceland, Denmark, Northern Germany etc.) (World Book 259).A major difference between Norse mythology and Greek mythology are both cultures views of the afterlife and characters what happens there. In Greek mythology there is one allotted place for fashion essay people to go after death and once they are there they stay there for all eternity.

In Norse mythology there are four different places for the dead: Folkvang, Valhalla, Helheim, and Rans hall or the halls of Ran. Folkvang is the allotted area for your everyday warrior who fought and died and did nothing more. Valhalla is Odins hall where 800 of the bravest warriors go and train for the coming of Ragnarok (literally the ending of the gods or the end of the world) Helheim is literally the house or home of Hel; Hel is the goddess of the underworlds Niflheim (land of who wrote disobedience fire and essay heat) and Helheim. Helheim is the place where one who didnt die or in battle goes, those who died from diseases, accidents, old age, etc. Ran is the goddess of the sea and stereotypical the drowned. She is essay said to sink ships and collect the Orwell by Andrew, drowned in fashion essay a net and take them to her hall where they dwell there.

In Greek mythology they go to the underworld (or Hades) and they are then separated and either got to Tartarus (hell) or the Elysian fields (heaven) (World Book 257). Folkvang, Valhalla, Helheim, and The Halls of Ran are four separate areas in the world of Norse mythology where as Hades is one and Tartarus and the Elysian fields are two places within Hades. The Greeks and the Norse, two big groups a long time ago, were very big on myths and used them to Why Athletes Essay, explain everything and anything that didnt make sense. It also so happens that the myths are very similar and reasonably different. So how might these to power house countries myths compare? First off, the fashion essay, Greeks and the Norse came from totally to different areas and life style (World Book 257) On the Norse side you have all the Northern countries which ranged from a lot of different backgrounds and the Greeks who at one point were considered the greatest country.

The Norse, up north, had a difficult time. They had extreme drops of temperature during the winter with barley any light and a great rise of temperature during the summer. Another thing is window that Greeks and the North had a lot of basic ideas that were the same. They each had only one ruler of the gods and essay man, Zeus and Odin, and they each had wives, Hera and Frigg, that had a little less power than their husbands but more than the Essay, other gods. Each had the certain realms such as a god of, war, love, seas/water, and underworld/death. This might not seem like a big thing but if you look at other myths from fashion essay, different groups you will find only one god or creator but the jack london, Greeks and the Norse had gods for almost every different realm possible.

Another thing you could conclude is that these gods kind of checked the power of Zeus/ Odin who also would check the power of the gods. The Greek gods were more joyful and happy compared to the dark and gloomy Norse gods (World Book 257) The climate can be the reason for that but it also greatly affected the adventures and stories of the gods. With the Greek myths you could see that a lot of them were mainly love stories such as Venus and Adonis, Cupid and Psyche, and the story of Ceres, Proserpina, and Pluto. Fashion! Even though most these stories dont end up in a good way you can still tell by reading them that the personality was more playful compared to Why Athletes Go Broke Essay, the Norse gods. The Norse myths were more about battle and struggle with usually an end result of death such as the story of the Death of Blader or the stories of the two heroes Beowulf and Siegfried. Both Greeks and Norse seemed to have the same idea of fate being important as it can be related to many of essay both their myths. The Norse called the gods of faith Norns and the Greeks used the now day word fate or Fates (World Book 257) both groups had three of these gods, they were females, and they both of course served the rear, same purpose. One sets out the string of life, another decides the length and fashion decides what is to happen to this person and the third cuts it off or ends it, which in simple form can be said as one sets the past, another the present, and the third the future. Orwell And Gattaca,! it seems that the fashion, Fates and Norns were more superior then the who wrote civil disobedience, gods themselves even though they fall into a different realm then the gods which truly shows how important these fates or this idea of fate was to the Greeks and Northen people (World Book 257) As you can see both the Greeks and Norse believed that their lives are predetermined and they cant really do much about it. The creation of the fashion, two stories is also slightly related.

The Norse believed that the world was once frozen over sea wolf jack and after years Ymir was born and Ymir was one of the first giants who was later killed by his grandchildren while the Greeks believed the world was formed from chaos were Gaea (mother earth) and Uranus (the heavens), were created. You can draw out from both stories that the creation of the gods and world was a struggle and not a very good place until these superior gods came in power. This idea really shows how much honor both gods had from their people. In each creation story a god raised up to essay, fight the current ruler which was usually. Why Athletes Essay! In the Greeks creation Cronus killed Uranus, who later followed the fashion, same fate as Uranus, and was killed by Zeus and in the Norse myths Odin fought against Ymir the giant whose body created the earth and heavens. The rulers of both stories can be viewed as brave and powerful because they both had to overthrow the last ruling god. Even with all the other gods it seems that no one comes close to the power that Zeus and Odin held. All in all the great Greek myths and the Norse myths are very similar in basic concepts and structure. A lot of other groups used myths but nothing can compare to the Greek and Norse myths with their great meaning and on 1984, Orwell and Gattaca, by Andrew Niccol reason for fashion essay everything.

Both sides are alike from the creation to Essay Orwell Niccol, the same power structure to the belief have having a preset faith. The only fashion essay, real difference is the Why Athletes Go Broke Essay, mind set and personality of the stories which can be explained to the major difference of climate between these two countries. Why might they be so similar? Was it that the fashion essay, same idea passed from Greek to Roman up north or was it just similar thinking, who knows. Only one thing is certain and that is that the Greek and Norse myths are very much alike. While the individual stories of the by northwest, gods and heroes differ, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Essay! Both are polytheistic mythologies they have multiple gods. Often the god can be seen affecting the earth through some natural phenomenon.

For example, Zeus in rear window Greek mythology and Thor in Norse both had a connection to lightning. Fashion Essay! Gods were often patrons of different trades or types of people. Stereotypical! Both Demeter (Greek) and Skadi (Norse) were connected to the harvest. The greatest difference is in the end of the gods. In Greek mythology there is no apocalypse no end of the world. Essay! The gods will always be on Mount Olympus, ruling over the earth. Norse mythology, in contrast, had a definitive end of the stereotypical blacks, world Ragnarok when great heroes of the fashion, past would return from the stereotypical blacks, dead to do battle. During Ragnarok, it was said that the gods were fated to die many of the top gods would die in battle with the essay, greatest enemies and creatures of the mythology. Hundreds of years ago people did not have the theme, technology to explain different forces of nature. They created gods, each with separate powers, to rule their domains.

Some of the gods were merciful, some were wicked, and others were merely servants of more powerful gods. Looking at the gods, it is easy to essay, tell what the civilization most valued. I am going to look at the Greek and the Norse gods to compare what was most important to their societies. Both cultures had a king of the gods. In Greek mythology there is no god who is sea wolf london more powerful than Zeus.

He is the youngest son of Cronus and fashion Rhea, ruler of the Titans. Cronus was told that one of his children would overthrow him, taking control of his kingdom. To be sure this would not happen; Cronus swallowed his first five children: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Orwell Niccol Poseidon. Rhea could not bear to see another one of fashion essay her children, devoured so she replaced Zeus with a rock wrapped in swaddling. Cronus, thinking he ate Zeus, left Rhea time to leave Zeus in a cave where he was raised by a divine goat, Amaltheia (pantheon/odin).

After Zeus was grown he went back to Cronus with the help of Gaia and Metis, who made an elixir to cause Cronus to vomit his brothers and sisters. Zeus then led the fights against the Titan dynasty. Afterwards they banished the Titans to Tartarus, the lowest place on earth, even lower than the underworld. Zeus and his brothers then drew straws to find who would rule where. Zeus gained rule of the sky, Poseidon ruled the seas, and Hades ruled the underworld (pantheon/odin). Zeus is the god of law, justice, morals, thunder, lightning, and on 1984, by George Orwell and Gattaca, by Andrew rain. It was his job to oversee and essay make sure laws were being kept. He was worshipped originally as a weather god. London! He was depicted as a middle-aged man with a youthful appearance; he was regale and was almost always shown ready to throw a lightning bolt (pantheon/zeus). The large part of todays spiritual and intellectual ideas is the result of combining Greek and Norse mythology. Essay! Upon comparison of common beliefs held today and those from the days of jack old, surprising similarities can be found.

The fact that these two sets of beliefs were combined is extraordinary, taking into account the fact that Greek ideas are almost completely opposite when compared with Norse concepts. Greek mythology was created to escape the horrors found in a barbaric world, and is therefore blissful and dreamy. Norse mythology, by contrast, is gloomy and fashion full of impending doom. Although a few similarities can be found, the stereotypical, stark contrast between Greek and Norse mythology is fashion essay much more obvious. The creation story, as told by Greek mythology, is very different to the Norse creation. Essay On 1984, By George And Gattaca,! In Greek mythology, the gods did not create the universe; rather they were created by the universe. The first descendants of Chaos were Night, Day, Heaven, and Earth. The gods were then descendants of Mother Earth and Father Heaven.

As a direct contrast, in Norse mythology, the gods were responsible for building the universe. In the Elder Edda, it is stated that, of old there was nothing. Giants were the fashion essay, first creatures created, and the gods were descendants of the sea wolf, first giant, Ymir. Fashion! The gods then in turn slew Ymir and made the earth, sky, and heaven from his body. The Norse heaven, Asgard, is Essay by George based on a completely different ideology than where the Greek gods dwelt, Mount Olympus. There is no joy or bliss in Asgard, merely a dismal sense of doom.

Accompanied with Asgard is the unceasing threat of essay inevitable and complete destruction. North Theme! The gods who inhabit Asgard know that one day Asgard will eventually be completely inebriated. Mount Olympus, by contrast, is a place full of merriment and carefree celebration. The gods spend their time drinking ambrosia and toying with the forces of nature. Essay! Their every action is for their own joy and delight, not necessarily for the benefit of mankind. Never does any thought of devastation or doom cross their minds, for the gods of civil Mount Olympus cannot be brought down.

Another distinction between Greek and Norse mythology is seen in the attitudes of their gods. Fashion! The Greek gods are immortal and indestructible while the Norse gods know they will be defeated and disobedience annihilated by evil forces. The Greek gods are assured victory in essay any battle, and cannot be considered heroic for this very reason. Every Olympian is immortal and invincible; they go into a battle sure of their victory and fearing nothing. A drawback to this great advantage is that the window characters, Greek gods never know the exhilaration in overcoming astounding odds, or the adrenaline that comes from confronting danger. The Norse gods are well accustomed to this type of stimulation, for they exist with the knowledge that they will one day be defeated. In the end, when the fashion, forces of Go Broke good and evil fight the fashion, final battle, evil will succeed over the Norse gods.

There is nothing the gods can do to prevent their fate. The gods do not give up, but will put up a strong fight until the very end. In all cultures, a hero is one who closely resembles the gods; therefore Norse heroes are always destined for doom, but face their fate fearlessly. London! Norse heroes confront disaster, knowing they cannot escape through heroic deeds. The Norsemen felt that the ultimate proof of a hero is continuing to resist while facing certain death.

In this manner, the hero dies undefeated, for essay he did not let even death falter his courage. North Theme! Signy, a Norse heroine, embodies these ideas. She dies along with her enemy after getting revenge for her familys death. Her heroic death is essay more of a triumph than avenging the wrong done to her. Mark Twain stated that, Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of north fear not absence of fear. The Norse idea of a hero embraces this idea, but the Greek notion of a hero opposes it. Contrasting to the Norse heroes, Greek heroes are fierce warriors who seem unconquerable. As Norse heroes are like Norse gods, so are Greek heroes like Greek gods in that they appear invincible. They slay monsters left and right, avenge those who have been wronged, and overcome all odds. The true test of a Greek hero is found in his strength, courage, or lack of fear, and brave deeds. Hercules, the quintessential Greek hero, was the most loved and most famed of all heroes in fashion Greek culture.

The son of a mortal woman and who wrote civil disobedience Zeus, Hercules is half god and essay half human. Oftentimes appearing godlike himself, Hercules possesses an incredible amount of strength, and fears nothing. His innumerable counts of jack london bravery even include aiding the gods in conquering the Giants. A major difference between Greek and fashion essay Norse mythology can be found in the personalities of Zeus and Odin. The Greek Zeus is Lord of the Sky and ruler over all the other gods.

He is a powerful god with the ability to induce fear, but also, a capital figure of fun. Zeus is supposed to have upheld the standards of right and wrong, but this is not always a very high standard. He entertains numerous affairs with mortal women and delights in causing trouble for mankind. Zeus is often pictured as amorous, joyful, and comic. Window! Odin, Zeus Norse counterpart, is also the sky father and ruler of the other Norse gods. Other than their similar roles in fashion mythology, Zeus and Odin could not be more opposite. Odin is always described as being strange, solemn, and detached, a probable result of his constant grapple with threatening doom. While Zeus spends his time frolicking with other women, Odin seeks as much knowledge as possible, often gained only through physical trials. He alone bears the stereotypical blacks, brunt of the responsibility for delaying as long as possible the day of complete destruction. The chasm between Greek and Norse mythology is huge. Norse mythology is full of despair, sacrifice, and desolation, creating a dark and gloomy portrayal of Norse culture.

The only bright spot in Norse mythology is remarkable heroism, which is essay characteristically marked by the death of the protagonist. Greek mythology contains stories of great victories over evil, love, adventure, and a carefree life. The hero inevitably wins and mankind is always celebrated. It seems impossible that the two could become one, but as different as they are, Greek and Norse mythology have combined to form the culture of the modern world. The Norms exist in the Norse mythology as the three creatures that determine Fate. Before they came to Asgard time did not exist. Because of this, one can say that the Norms are above the gods in by northwest theme such meaning that the gods cannot stop the Norms from doing their job, which is to create time. Without time one cannot determine Fate, because then you dont know when the events are going to essay, take place or in which order. The Norms visit each being, human or god, immediately after they are borne to determine his or her future.

Even though some stories say that there are many Norns, there are usually three mentioned; Urd (past), Skuld (present) and who wrote civil Verdandi (future). These creatures live by the first root of Yggdrasil (the world tree) next to a well, which is known as the Well of Fate. Every morning they come out of the cave they spend their night in, then scoop up water and fashion essay mix it with the sea wolf jack, sand around the tree to create magic dough. They spread it on Yggdrasil to prevent it from essay, become rotten and preserve the life spirit of the tree (Kirk, 1974). The Fates of Greek mythology are also known as the Moirae or Apparotioners. Who Wrote Civil Disobedience! These three females decide how long every individual is going to live.

They were sometimes considered superior to the gods. Essay! They were called Clotho (the Spinner), Lachesis (the Drawer of Fates) and Atropos (Inevitable). Rear Window Characters! Clotho comes to the newborn and spins out the thread of life, Lachesis measures it and decides what is going to happen to this being and Atropos cuts it off. (Kirk, 1974).There is a verse about them to remember what they did: Clotho colum retinet, Lachesis net, et Atropos occat, which means Clotho holds the spinning wheel, Lachesis spins and Atropos cuts it off. Essay! (B3) They are often imagined sitting around a cauldron or a spinning wheel. By Northwest! (Kirk, 1974).In both sets of fashion essay mythologies the creatures that determine Fate are identical in purpose, gender and number. They are both above the gods and their jobs are inevitable for everyone. No one can go against who wrote civil the Fates. There are several Greek stories, which tell about the tragedy of the persons who try to overcome their fate (e.g. Oedipus).

In Norse mythology Odin himself learns about his fate (being killed during Ragnar??k, the doomsday, by the wolf Fenris) from the Norms, and there is nothing he can do about it but prepare himself and essay his allies. Both the Norms and the Fates were thought as sitting around something circular, this may represent the Essay, circle of life, which is not exclusive to these myths. If we consider the essay, mythologies as a reflection of the society, the conclusion is that both the blacks, Greeks and Vikings believed that their lives were already decided and one can only follow his/hers fate. This maybe made it easier for people to fashion, live, as no matter what they did it was already predicted. As written, the power of the Weird Sisters was inevitable for everyone (Kirk, 1974).

The Greek and Roman Mythologies have fascinated human beings for centuries, inspiring books, movies, research, and who wrote civil disobedience conversation among those who want to learn more and who want to share the fables of the Gods and Goddesses. Their stories (myths or mythos, depending on the origin), their triumphs and failures, and their imminent Immortality has been the influence of fashion essay many other religions, including Paganism and Norse Mythology. Unfortunately, many people do not know the stereotypical blacks, differences between Greek and essay Roman mythology, assuming that the two are interchangeable at will. In reality, the two are very different from one another, and capture almost opposing life values that are central to the people of the time. Greek and Roman gods were not worshipped, as the Christian God is, but rather used as a model for how mortal humans should and should not behave. The Greeks came first, some 1,000 years before the Romans. Their most appreciated work, the Iliad, was distributed 700 years before the Romans most popular manuscript, the Aeneid. The Iliad was based on at least 300 years of myths and stories, which were gathered from the who wrote civil disobedience, tales passed down by mortal observant, which certainly correlates with the Christian Bible. It was not meant as a holy scripture, however, but as a recorded history of the Greek Gods and Goddesses, who were revered by men during that time. The Greeks were focused primarily on life on earth, versus the eventuality of the fashion essay, afterlife. They believed that a mans worth was determined by his actions during his life, and that his true immortality was in who wrote disobedience the remembrance of his gifts to the world.

His traits, his personality, and his interaction with other people spoke for his self-worth. Gods and Goddesses were based on fashion essay human personality traits such as Love, Honor, Dignity, and Hatred and their actions in myths were symbolic of the actions of sea wolf jack london men. Fashion Essay! Many myths involved a mortal or a deity snatching something back from the Underworld, which illustrated their belief that the afterlife was not of any concern, and that it was the pysical world that was important. Poets, artists, and those who gave themselves to creative pursuits were well-honored by the Greeks. They held creativity above physical works in on 1984, by George Orwell by Andrew the mortal and mythical world; myths reflected those personal traits and were meant to expose the positive and negative aspects of humanity. Deities were important to essay, the progression of life, but mortal heros were just as sacred, for it was their contributions to stereotypical blacks, society that mattered in fashion the end.

Individualism was also very important; the actions of a group were not as consequential as the actions of an individual. Men were responsible for window their own well-being, and could not be bothered by the mistakes of the masses. Romans, on the other hand, were far more disciplined than the Greeks, and focused on actions rather than words. Whereas the Greeks revered the poet, the Romans held up the warrior as the epitome of sanctity, and rewarded bravery and risks taken by both mortals and deities. They strongly felt that good deeds on earth would be well-received in Heaven, and fashion essay they strove to earn their place among the Gods in the afterlife.

In fact, they believed that if one performed well enough in life, that they would transcend to Gods after death. The Romans adopted many of the myths and deities of the Greeks, though they changed names and rear characters circumstances to support their own beliefs. Fashion! For example, the Roman Gods were not individualistic, as were the Greek Gods, and were named after objects and stereotypical actions rather than human characteristics. Myths were rooted in the brave, heroic acts of the Gods, and rarely displayed the lives of mortals, because mortal life was not as important as that after death. Also, Roman Gods and Goddesses were often not gender-specific, since their individual characteristics were not central to their actions.

Roman and Greek Mythologies are decidedly different, though they are rooted in similar histories. A study of their individual characteristics illustrates the values and fashion beliefs of the Greeks and Romans respectively, and can offer a better understanding of how these myths and Why Athletes Essay anecdotes originally came about. In Western culture there are a number of literary or narrative genres that scholars have related in different ways to myths. Examples are fables, fairy tales, folktales, sagas, epics, legends, and etiologic tales (which refer to causes or explain why a thing is the way it is). Another form of tale, the parable, differs from myth in its purpose and character. Even in the West, however, there is no agreed definition of any of these genres and some scholars question whether multiplying categories of narrative is fashion helpful at all, as opposed to working with a very general concept such as the traditional tale.

Non-Western cultures apply classifications that are different both from the Western categories and from one another. Most, however, make a basic distinction between true and fictitious narratives, with true ones corresponding to what in the West would be called myths. If it is by northwest theme accepted that the category of traditional tale should be subdivided, one way of doing so is to fashion, regard the various subdivisions as comparable to bands of sea wolf color in a spectrum. Within this figurative spectrum, there will be similarities and analogies between myth and folktale or between myth and legend or between fairy tale and folktale. In the section that follows, it is assumed that useful distinctions can be drawn between different categories. It should, however, be remembered throughout that these classifications are far from rigid and that, in fashion many cases, a given tale might be plausibly assigned to more than one category. The importance of studying myth to provide a key to a human society is a matter of historical record. In the middle of the 19th century, for instance, a newly appointed British governor of New Zealand, Sir George Grey, was confronted by the problem of how to come to terms with the by George by Andrew Niccol, Maori, who were hostile to the British. He learned their language, but that proved insufficient for an understanding of the way in which they reasoned and argued. In order to fashion essay, be able to conduct negotiations satisfactorily, he found it necessary to study the Maoris mythology, to which they made frequent reference.

Other government officials and Christian missionaries of the sea wolf london, 19th and 20th centuries made similar efforts to essay, understand the sea wolf, mythologies of nations or tribes so as to facilitate communication. Fashion Essay! Such studies were more than a means to an end, whether efficient administration or conversion; they amounted to the discovery that myths present a model or charter for window mans behavior and that the world of myth provides guidance for crucial elements in human existencewar and essay peace, life and rear window characters death, truth and essay falsehood, good and evil. In addition to such practically motivated attempts to understand myth, theorists and scholars from Go Broke Essay, many disciplines have interested themselves in the study of the subject. A close study of myth has developed in the West, especially since the 18th century. Much of its material has come from the study of the Greek and Roman classics, from which it has also derived some of its methods of fashion interpretation. The growth of philosophy in ancient Greece furthered allegorical interpretations of mythi.e., finding other or supposedly deeper meanings hidden below the surface of mythical texts. Such meanings were usually seen as involving natural phenomena or human values.

Related to this was a tendency toward rationalism, especially when those who studied myths employed false etymologies. Rationalism in this context connotes the scrutiny of myths in such a way as to make sense of the stereotypical blacks, statements contained in them without taking literally their references to gods, monsters, or the supernatural. Thus, the fashion, ancient writer Palaiphatos interpreted the story of Europa (carried off to Crete on the back of a handsome bull, which was actually Zeus in rear window characters disguise) as that of a woman abducted by a Cretan called Tauros, the essay, Greek word for civil bull; and Skylla, the bestial and cannibalistic creature who attacked Odysseus ship according to Homers Odyssey, was by the same process of rationalizing interpreted as simply the name of a pirate ship. Of special and fashion essay long-lasting influence in the history of the interpretation of myth was Euhemerism (named after Euhemerus, a Greek writer who flourished about 300 BC), according to which certain gods were originally great people venerated because of stereotypical their benefactions to mankind. The early Church Fathers adopted an essay attitude of modified Euhemerism, according to which classical mythology was to be explained in terms of mere men who had been raised to superhuman, demonic status because of their deeds. By this means, Christians were able to incorporate myths from the culturally authoritative pagan past into a Christian framework while defusing their religious significancethe gods became ordinary humans. The Middle Ages did not develop new theoretical perspectives on myth, nor, despite some elaborate works of london historical and etymological erudition, did the Renaissance.

In both periods, interpretations in terms of allegory and Euhemerism tended to predominate. About 1800 the fashion essay, Romantics growing fascination with language, the postulation of an Indo-European language family, the study of Sanskrit, and the growth of Essay on 1984, by George by Andrew comparative studies, especially in history and fashion philology, were all part of a trend that included the study of myth. The relevance of Indo-European studies to an understanding of Greek and Roman mythology was carried to an extreme in jack the work of Friedrich Max Muller, a German Orientalist who moved to fashion, Britain and undertook important research on comparative linguistics. Why Athletes Go Broke Essay! In his view, expressed in such works as Comparative Mythology (1856), the mythology of the original Indo-European peoples had consisted of fashion essay allegorical stories about the workings of nature, in particular such features as the sky, the rear characters, Sun, and the dawn. In the course of essay time, though, these original meanings had been lost (through, in Mullers notorious phrasing, a disease of rear window characters language), so that the myths no longer told in a rationally intelligible way of phenomena in the natural world but instead appeared to describe the irrational activities of gods, heroes, nymphs, and others. For instance, one Greek myth related the pursuit of the nymph Daphne by the god Phoebus Apollo.

Sincein Mullers interpretation of the evidence of comparative linguisticsDaphne originally meant dawn, and Phoibos meant morning sun, the original story was rationally intelligible as the dawn is put to flight by the morning sun. One of the problems with this view is, of course, that it fails to account for the fact that the fashion, Greeks continued to tell this and stereotypical blacks similar stories long after their supposed meanings had been forgotten; and they did so, moreover, in the manifest belief that the stories referred, not to essay, nature, but precisely to gods, heroes, and other mythical beings. Interest in myth was greatly stimulated in Germany by Friedrich von Schellings philosophy of mythology, which argued that myth was a form of expression, characteristic of stereotypical a particular stage in essay human development, through which men imagine the Orwell, Absolute (for Schelling an all-embracing unity in which all differences are reconciled). Scholarly interest in myth has continued into the 20th century. Many scholars have adopted a psychological approach because of essay interest aroused by the theories of Sigmund Freud. Subsequently, new approaches in sociology and sea wolf london anthropology have continued to encourage the study of myth.

In the industrialized Western society of the 20th century, myths and related types of tales continue to be told. Fashion Essay! Urban folklorists collect stories that have much in common with the tales collected by the Grimm brothers, except that in the modern narratives the lone traveler is likely to be threatened, not by north a werewolf, but by a phantom hitchhiker, and the location of his danger may be a freeway rather than a forest. Computer games use sophisticated technology to represent quests involving dragons to be slain and princesses to be saved and married. The myth of Superman, the superhuman hero who saves the world and preserves the American way, is fashion essay a notable image embodying modern Americans confidence in the moral values that their culture espouses. Not dissimilar are myths about the early pioneers in Why Athletes the American Wild West, as retold in countless motion pictures. Such stories often reinforce stereotypical attitudes about the moral superiority of the settlers to fashion, the native Indians, although sometimes such attitudes are called into question in other movies that attempt to demythologize the who wrote, Wild West. A particular illustration of the power that myths continue to exert was provided as late as the 1940s by the belief in the existence of an essay Aryan racial group, separate from and superior to the Semitic group.

This myth was based in part on jack the assumption that peoples whose languages are related are also related racially. Essay! The fact that this assumption is spurious did not prevent the Aryan myth from gaining wide acceptance in Europe from the 18th century onward, and it was eventually to provide a supposed intellectual justification for the persecution of the Semitic Jews by their Aryan Germanic superiors during the period of Essay by George and Gattaca, by Andrew Nazi domination. This episode suggests that, in politics, a myth will take hold if it serves the interests and focuses the aspirations of a particular group; the truth or falsity of the myth is fashion essay irrelevant. In a sense, of course, this function is on 1984, by George and Gattaca, merely an fashion extension of its more general role in religion, where a myth, as well as addressing questions such as a societys place in the cosmos, may serve to justify a particular kind of governmental organization. In conclusion, if we think of myths as true, if we believe in them, then obviously, we are thinking in religious terms. But belief is also psychological: some say humans need to believe in some power greater than them.

Others, like Joseph Campbell, see the Why Athletes Essay, origins of myth and religion in fashion essay the psychological response of early man to the trauma of death. Thus, belief in a greater power arises when humans are faced with the mystery of jack london what happens after death. The earliest efforts to rationalize myth by seeing it as disguised history, as disguised philosophy, or as fables illustrating moral truths all proceeded from a desire to make the seemingly irrational and immoral actions of gods and men appear rational and moral. Thus, bizarre or grotesque elements in the stories could be rationalized as disguised history, philosophy, or morality. Fashion Essay! However, these early rationalizes often ignored elements of the stereotypical blacks, myths which did not fit into their allegorical schemes and made little attempt to look at myths psychologically or symbolically, or to place the them in fashion essay their proper historical context. (The history of these early euhemerizers was often mere wishful thinking, as when they saw Zeus as a tribal hero who had been deified.) But myths do embody historical, philosophical, and moral elements; we must search for them more carefully than early mythologists did. Students should remember, however, that the stereotypical, symbolic, religious, ritual, or magical explanations that myths offer may differ from essay, modern scientific or historical explanations.

Something as great as God may be quite difficult for limited human minds to comprehend, Joseph Campbell says we can only know God through stories and symbols, or myth. But our stories are human and limited, and thus cannot, according to Campbell, tell literal truths, but all can and do tell metaphoric and symbolic truths. Stereotypical! Ritual is another way in which humans attempt to embody or even call upon the unknown. Ritual patterns may reappear in myths and mythic motifs may be reflected in rituals (Hero 381). But there is no easy rule for tracing the influence of ritual on fashion myth or vice-versa. London! Mythologists continue to argue whether the repetitive patterns of motifs and plot seen in many myths stem from fashion, ritual patterns (Hero 381), or from psychological archetypes inherent in humans, or from the repetition common in oral forms of storytelling (Hero 381). No one way offers a key to the interpretation of myths, but all can offer insights to different motifs and plot elements. When interpreting myths, students should remember Campbells wise advice: There is no final system for the interpretation of myths, and who wrote civil disobedience there never will be any such thing (Hero 381). This may sound like a cheerless sentence, but cheer up: there may be no foolproof system, but there are ways to trap the truth in myths. According to Campbell, myths are like the god Proteus (sometimes called the Old Man of the Sea) in the Odyssey who always speaks the truth (Homer 52, my emphasis). But first you must catch him and hold onto him, which isnt easy because he constantly changes shapes in fashion essay order to get away. He will turn into north theme all sorts of shapes to try you, into all the creatures of that live and essay move upon the earth, into water, into north by northwest theme blazing fire; but you must hold him fast and press him all the harder (Homer 53).

Great advice for any student of fashion essay myth! Hold onto that story, no matter how much it changes or how weird it seems, and rear eventually it will calm down and answer your questions. But Proteus only answers the specific questions put to him. Fashion! So, to get good answers, you have to ask a lot of different questions. essay planet mars Where there is no vision, the people perish. Before space exploration, Mars was considered the best candidate for harboring extraterrestrial life. Astronomers thought they saw straight lines crisscrossing its surface. This led to the popular belief that irrigation canals on essay the planet had been constructed by intelligent beings. In 1938, when Orson Welles broadcasted a radio drama based on Why Athletes Go Broke the science fiction classic War of the Worlds by H.G. Fashion Essay! Wells, enough people believed in disobedience the tale of invading Martians to cause a near panic. Another reason for scientists to expect life on Mars had to essay do with the apparent seasonal color changes on the planet's surface.

This phenomenon led to speculation that conditions might support a bloom of Martian vegetation during the warmer months and cause plant life to become dormant during colder periods. In July of 1965, Mariner 4, transmitted 22 close-up pictures of stereotypical blacks, Mars. All that was revealed was a surface containing many craters and naturally occurring channels but no evidence of artificial canals or flowing water. Essay! Finally, in July and by George Orwell and Gattaca, by Andrew September 1976, Viking Landers 1 and 2 touched down on the surface of Mars. The three biology experiments aboard the essay, landers discovered unexpected and enigmatic chemical activity in the Martian soil, but provided no clear evidence for the presence of living microorganisms in rear the soil near the landing sites. According to mission biologists, Mars is self-sterilizing. They believe the combination of solar ultraviolet radiation that saturates the surface, the extreme dryness of the soil and the oxidizing nature of the soil chemistry prevent the formation of living organisms in the Martian soil. The question of life on Mars at fashion essay, some time in the distant past remains open. Other instruments found no sign of Why Athletes, organic chemistry at either landing site, but they did provide a precise and definitive analysis of the composition of the Martian atmosphere and found previously undetected trace elements.

The atmosphere of Mars is quite different from that of essay, Earth. It is Why Athletes Go Broke Essay composed primarily of carbon dioxide with small amounts of other gases. The six most common components of the atmosphere are: Carbon Dioxide (CO2): 95.32% Nitrogen (N2): 2.7% Argon (Ar): 1.6% Oxygen (O2): 0.13% Water (H2O): 0.03% Neon (Ne): 0.00025 % Martian air contains only about 1/1,000 as much water as our air, but even this small amount can condense out, forming clouds that ride high in fashion the atmosphere or swirl around the blacks, slopes of towering volcanoes. Local patches of early morning fog can form in valleys. At the essay, Viking Lander 2 site, a thin layer of water frost covered the ground each winter. There is evidence that in the past a denser martian atmosphere may have allowed water to flow on the planet. Physical features closely resembling shorelines, gorges, riverbeds and islands suggest that great rivers once marked the planet. The average recorded temperature on Mars is -63 C (-81 F) with a maximum temperature of 20 C (68 F) and Why Athletes Go Broke a minimum of -140 C (-220 F). Barometric pressure varies at each landing site on a semiannual basis. Carbon dioxide, the fashion essay, major constituent of the london, atmosphere, freezes out to form an immense polar cap, alternately at each pole.

The carbon dioxide forms a great cover of snow and then evaporates again with the essay, coming of spring in each hemisphere. When the southern cap was largest, the mean daily pressure observed by sea wolf jack london, Viking Lander 1 was as low as 6.8 millibars; at fashion essay, other times of the year it was as high as 9.0 millibars. The pressures at the Viking Lander 2 site were 7.3 and 10.8 millibars. In comparison, the average pressure of the Earth is 1000 millibars. Carbon Monoxide (CO) This image of mars came from a series of pictures taken by the Mars Global Surveyor wide angle cameras.

Hamilton) This image is rear a large mosaic of the Valles Marineris [VAL-less mar-uh-NAIR-iss] hemisphere of Mars. It is a view similar to that which one would see from essay, a spacecraft. The lower center of the scene shows the entire Valles Marineris canyon system, more than 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) long and up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) deep, extending from Noctis Labyrinthus, the sea wolf, arcuate system of graben to the west, to the chaotic terrain to the east. Many huge ancient river channels begin from the chaotic terrain and north-central canyons and run north. Many of the channels flowed into a basin called Acidalia Planitia, which is the essay, dark area in the extreme north of this picture. The three Tharsis volcanoes (dark red spots), each about Why Athletes, 25 kilometers (16 miles) high, are visible to the west along with Olympus Mons the largest volcano on the planet. Fashion Essay! Very ancient terrain covered by blacks, many impact craters lies to the south of Valles Marineris. Essay! The polar cap can be seen to the north. (Copyright Calvin J. Using four parameters, the Martian core size and mass can be determined. However, only three out of the four are known and include the total mass, size of who wrote, Mars, and fashion the moment of stereotypical, inertia. Mass and size was determined accurately from early missions. Essay! The moment of inertia was determined from Viking lander and Pathfinder Doppler data, by measuring the precession rate of Mars. The fourth parameter, needed to complete the interior model, will be obtained from future spacecraft missions.

With the three known parameters, the model is significantly constrained. If the north by northwest theme, Martian core is fashion dense (composed of iron) similar to Earth's or SNC meteorites thought to originate from Mars, then the minimum core radius would be about Why Athletes Go Broke, 1300 kilometers. If the core is made out of less-dense material such as a mixture of sulfur and iron, the maximum radius would probably be less than 2000 kilometers. (Copyright 1998 by Calvin J. The scene is a late-spring afternoon in the Amazonis Planitia region of northern Mars. The view covers an area about four-tenths of a mile (644 meters) across. North is toward the top. The length of the dusty whirlwind's shadow indicates that the dust plume reaches more than half a mile (800 meters) in height. The plume is about 30 yards or meters in diameter. A westerly breeze partway up the height of the on 1984, Orwell Niccol, dust devil produced a delicate arc in essay the plume.

The image was taken during the time of Go Broke Essay, Martian year when the planet is farthest from the essay, sun. Just as on Earth, winds on Mars are powered by solar heating. Exposure to the sun's rays declines during this season, yet even now, dust devils act relentlessly to clean the surface of freshly deposited dust, a little at a time. The full range of topography on Mars is about 19 miles (30 kilometers), one and a half times the range of elevations found on Earth, The most curious aspect of the map is the striking difference between the planet's low, smooth Northern Hemisphere and essay the heavily cratered Southern Hemisphere, which sits, on north theme average, about three miles (five kilometers) higher than the north. This image is a mosaic of the Schiaparelli hemisphere of Mars. The center of this image is near the impact crater Schiaparelli, 450 kilometers (280 miles) in diameter. The dark streaks with bright margins emanating from rear characters, craters in the Oxie Palus region, upper left of image, are caused by erosion and/or deposition by essay, the wind. Bright white areas to north theme the south, including the Hellas impact basin at extreme lower right, are covered by carbon dioxide frost. (Courtesy USGS) This image shows part of Candor Chasm in Valles Marineris. It is fashion centered at Latitude -5.0, Longitude 70.0. The view is from the who wrote civil disobedience, north looking into the chasm. Candor Chasm's geomorphology is complex, shaped by tectonics, mass wasting, wind, and perhaps by water and volcanism. (Courtesy USGS) This picture (centered at latitude 4 S, longitude 76 W) shows areas of central Valles Marineris, including Candor Chasm (lower left), Ophir Chasm (lower right), and Hebes Chasm (upper right). Complex layered deposits in the canyons may have been deposited in lakes, and if so, are of great interest for future searches for fossil life on Mars.

The pinkish deposits in fashion Candor Chasm may be due to hydrothermal alterations and by northwest the production of fashion essay, crystalline ferric oxides. The Chasma is bordered by 4 km high walled cliffs, most likely faults, that show spur-and-gully morphology and smooth sections.

The walls have been dissected by landslides forming reentrants; one area (upper left) on the north wall shows a young landslide about 100 km wide. The volume of the landslide debris is more than 1000 times greater than that from the May 18, 1980 debris avalanche from fashion essay, Mount St. Helens. The longitudinal grooves seen in the foreground are thought to be due to differential shear and lateral spreading at sea wolf, high velocities. Fashion! The pictures were taken on February 25, 1995, when Mars was at a distance of 103 million kilometers (65 million miles). To the surprise of researchers, Mars is cloudier than seen in previous years. Stereotypical Blacks! This means the planet is cooler and drier, because water vapor in the atmosphere freezes out to form ice-crystal clouds. The three images show the Tharsis, Valles Marineris and Syrtis Major regions. (Credit: Philip James, University of Toledo; Steven Lee, University of Colorado; and NASA) This image of the head of Ravi Vallis shows a 300-kilometer (186-mile) long portion of a channel. Like many other channels that empty into the northern plains of fashion essay, Mars, Ravi Vallis orginates in a region of stereotypical blacks, collapsed and fashion essay disrupted (chaotic) terrain within the planet's older, cratered highlands. Structures in these channels indicate that they were carved by liquid water moving at high flow rates.

The abrupt beginning of the channel, with no apparent tributaries, suggests that the water was released under great pressure from beneath a confining layer of frozen ground. As this water was released and flowed away, the rear window, overlying surface collapsed, producing the disruption and subsidence shown here. Three such regions of chaotic collapsed material are seen in this image, connected by essay, a channel whose floor was scoured by the flowing water. The flow in this channel was from west to east (left to right). This channel ultimately links up with a system of channels that flowed northward into Chryse Basin. (Copyright Calvin J. Hamilton; Caption: LPI) The water that carved the channels to the north and east of the Valles Marineris canyon system had tremendous erosive power. One consequence of this erosion was the rear window characters, formation of streamlined islands where the water encountered obstacles along its path.

This image shows two streamlined islands that formed as the water was diverted by two 8-10 kilometer (5-6 mile) diameter craters lying near the mouth of fashion essay, Ares Vallis in Chryse Planitia. The water flowed from south to north (bottom to top of the image). The height of the scarp surrounding the upper island is about 400 meters (1,300 feet), while the scarp surrounding the who wrote civil, southern island is about 600 meters (2,000 feet) high. (Copyright Calvin J. Hamilton; Caption: LPI) Unlike the features shown in the above two images, many systems on Mars do not show evidence of catastrophic flooding. Essay! Instead, they show a resemblance to drainage systems on Earth, where water acts at slow rates over long periods of time. North By Northwest! As on essay Earth, the channels shown here merge together to form larger channels. However, these valley networks are less developed than typical terrestrial drainage systems, with the Martian examples lacking small-scale streams feeding into the larger valleys. Because of the absence of small-scale streams in the Martian valley networks, it is thought that the valleys were carved primarily by ground water flow rather than by runoff of rain. Although liquid water is currently unstable on the surface of Mars, theoretical studies indicate that flowing groundwater might be able to form valley networks if the water flowed beneath a protective cover of rear window characters, ice. Alternatively, because the valley networks are confined to relatively old regions of Mars, their presence may indicate that Mars once possessed a warmer and wetter climate in its early history. Fashion! (Copyright Calvin J. Stereotypical! Hamilton; Caption: LPI) This image shows the south polar cap of Mars as it appears near its minimum size of about 400 kilometers (249 miles).

It consists mainly of frozen carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide cap never melts completely. Essay! The ice appears reddish due to dust that has been incorporated into the cap. Jack! (Courtesy NASA) This image is an oblique view of the north polar cap of Mars. Unlike the south polar cap, the north polar cap probably consists of water-ice. (Copyright Calvin J. Hamilton)

One of the discoveries of the Mariner 9 spacecraft was that the south polar cap of Mars was made of thin layers or laminations of ice and sediment. Four years later, on October 10, 1976, the Viking 2 spacecraft took this picture of the Martian north polar cap. The visible layering occurred as a result of wind born dust settling upon the polar cap. As the fashion, caps experience climatic variations, they expand and contract. The layers of who wrote, dust sediment tend to fashion grow thicker near the poles where ice deposits remain for Why Athletes Go Broke Essay, longer periods of time. The thickness of the deposits indicates they were formed during cyclical climatic variation rather than annual changes.

As ice withdraws from a region, wind exposes the layers sculpting valleys and scarps. The formation of layered deposits is an active process today. (Copyright 1998 by fashion, Calvin J. The full image has a field of traverse dunes on the left and barchan dunes on the right with a transition zone inbetween. Transverse dunes are oriented perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction. They are long and fashion linear, and window characters frequently join their neighbor in a low-angle Y junction. Barchan dunes are crescent-shaped mounds with downwind-pointing horns. These dunes are comparable in size to the largest dunes found on the Earth. (Copyright Calvin J. Hamilton) Local dust storms are relatively common on Mars.

They tend to occur in areas of high topographic and/or high thermal gradients (usually near the polar caps), where surface winds would be strongest. This storm is several hundreds of kilometers in extent and is located near the edge of the south polar cap. Some local storms grow larger, others die out. (Copyright Calvin J.
