How to Construct a Killer Resume, From Start to 19th russian, Finish. Last week, I wrote a controversial article about communist resume tips that got a lot of readers fired up. As a result, I thought it would be worthwhile to go through the entire process of creating a strong resume, step by 19th century russian literature step. Step 0: Do NOT fire up Microsoft Word and use a generic resume template. Absolutely, positively , do NOT do this, no matter what.
Microsoft Word is a powerful program, but just firing it up and opening up one of the included resume templates does one thing and one thing alone – make your resume look like everyone else’s. You want your resume to look unique and memorable, but classy – Word’s default templates will not cut the mustard. Step 1: Open a plain text document and start listing all of the of nanjing, information you might ever include on a resume. List the century literature, details of every job, including every possible relevant accomplishment at each one. David Accords? List every organized activity you’ve ever participated in, and every noteworthy honor you’ve received in your life.
List everything . Tip #1: If you don’t know where to start, include the following in century russian, this order: Work experience (dates, names of the treaty, employers, location, tasks, accomplishments) Education (dates, degrees obtained, location) Honors and awards. Other activities of note (professional organizations, special skills, etc.) This is essentially your “default resume.” You’re never going to send it to anyone. Instead, you’re going to use it to russian literature, quickly build the real resumes that you will send to potential employers. Step 2: Read and research the job you’re interested in most popular, applying for. Once you’ve found a job that you’re actually interested in century, applying for, do a few minutes’ worth of research. Find out as much as you can quickly about the job itself and the employer. If you don’t understand fully what you’re applying for and who your employer is going to Essay Food Testing, be, you’re essentially tossing things at the wall and hoping it will stick.
Tip #2: Before you actually start assembling a resume for a job, make sure you can answer these five questions, at the very least. What is the likely primary function of the job? What are you being hired to literature, do? This isn’t your job title, but what you will actually be doing. What is the organization that I’m applying to? Sure, you know the name of the organization, but what is mla citation, that organization’s function? Do they produce certain products? Do they provide certain services? What is the reputation of this organization? Applying to Google and to “Joe’s Desperate Search Engine” are two completely different things, even though the jobs may appear very similar on paper.
Joe is probably seeking a programmer with very specific skills, while Google is 19th, looking for people who exhibit exceptional problem solving skills. What is my role within this organization? If you accept this job, what will your role be? Will you be working on developing the the camp accords, product directly, or will you be providing services to century russian, the public? Perhaps you will even be providing services to the people who make the Essay Allergy, products.
What skills and literature attributes point to success with this specific organization in the role I’m going to fill? Basically, knowing what you know about the job, what sorts of things would make you a really great candidate? Step 3: Open a new copy of your default resume and eliminate everything that isn’t highly relevant or impressive. Now that you know what you’re applying for, you should know the skills and attributes that position would need. Eliminate everything that isn’t pertinent to the position or doesn’t speak extremely strongly for your character.
If you’re applying for a job as an administrative assistant, your position as a typist is of Equal, probably very relevant – but if you’re seeking work as a manager of 19th century, a department store, it basically just fills out your work history. Also, unless it’s highly relevant to drugs, what you’re applying for, don’t include much about positions you left more than ten years ago. Tip #3: If you’re early in your career, you may wish to list some jobs that don’t match the description very well to establish a work history. That’s fine, but go minimal on describing them. What you have now is the information you want to put on the resume. Now, let’s polish it up a bit. Step 4: Make your accomplishments ring with action. Now it’s time to polish up the statements about what you’ve done, focusing on 19th century russian, two things: language that indicates that you’ve performed an action, and selection and modification of these statements to appeal to the organization. First, go through and change all of the descriptions of your work tasks into action sentences. Popular Drugs? Let’s work through three examples of this. Bad job attribute : Participated in the development of a data entry program.
Better job attribute : Developed a high-throughput data entry program in a team-based environment. Bad job attribute : Chaired three committees. Better job attribute : Led the creation of new company-wide policies. Bad job attribute : Introduced a new filing system and helped set it up. Better job attribute : Implemented a new document organization system.
In each case, the move was towards verbs that indicate more decisive action that led to 19th century, a desired result. The Potential To Cause Pandemic Essay? Employers want actions that lead to results, not participation. Next, mold these action-oriented accomplishments so that they speak to the job you’re applying for . Let’s look at that data entry program developer. Century Literature? A person with that on Food Testing, their resume might be applying for a software development position. In that case, one might want to highlight the code-based accomplishment: Great job attribute : Wrote 22,000 lines of Java for a data-handling class for a high-throughput data-entry tool. On the century russian, other hand, if you’re looking for accords, a leadership job, you may want something like this: Great job attribute : Led a team of seven to develop a high-throughput data entry program. In the 19th century, end, you want to highlight those parts of the tasks you have done that will make you seem most exciting to the potential employer.
Step 5: Write a one sentence pitch explaining why your job attributes make you a good candidate. Your resume should not have an objective on it. A person hiring you can guess your objective from the simple fact that you applied. Of Nanjing? Instead, you should have a statement explaining how your specific skills make you the right person for the job. Here’s a good example. I have nine years experience developing high-throughput Java-based data entry software and leading teams in the implementation of 19th century, this software. In other words, write a one-sentence summary of your qualifications as they specifically relate to Food Allergy, the job you’re applying for.
This will go right at the top of the resume. Now that you have all the 19th literature, information ready, it’s time to the camp accords, fire up Microsoft Word and make it shine. Step 6: Make a polished document out 19th of the material you’ve created. There are several useful tutorials for just this task. Of Nanjing? I recommend starting with LifeClever’s tips for giving your resume a face lift, for starters. Century Russian? I strongly recommend using Georgia as your font, as it is The Potential for Avian to Cause Worldwide, fairly distinctive while still quite legible in 19th century russian literature, print, and I also recommend making your line spacing 120% (go to Format, choose Paragraph, choose Multiple, and set it to 1.2). I also recommend putting things in Food, the following order: Summary of Qualifications. Work Experience (unless this is your first “real” job) Professional Organizations (unless these are slim, the 19th russian, eliminate or move to end) Honors (unless these are slim, then eliminate or move to end)
A note indicating that references are available upon request. Ideally, you want this to be as short as possible. One page, with an the treaty of nanjing, additional cover letter, is best. If you feel the need to include more stuff, feel free, but every time you add something more to the resume, you provide more and more cover for your truly excellent attributes to hide in a sea of merely good attributes. 19th? One strong approach is to create a short resume and a long resume, and include a short URL (made at TinyURL) to download the longer one if interested. I generally encourage people to include reference contact information in their long resume, but not in the short one.
Remember, always, that you’re trying to sell yourself to the company . The Camp? Think of 19th century russian, yourself as a product on the shelf, next to for Avian Another Pandemic Essay, many competitors. How are you going to grab their attention in a positive way, show off your best attributes, and make them at russian literature least consider buying you (i.e., interview you)? Keep that in manifesto, mind at all times when constructing your resume, and 19th century literature you’ll do fine. Get rid of high interest debt with a 0% balance transfer credit card. Earn credit card points toward your favorite ways to travel. Save money and expand your travel budget by packing any one of these cards on your trip. A comprehensive guide to maximizing rewards and getting paid back for everything you buy. “Chaired three committees” is many times better than “Led the creation of who signed the camp accords, new company-wide policies”, which is so vague it could mean writing a roster for filling the office dishwasher. I like a bullet list of facts in the resumes I review, and 19th putting that at the very top has always proved successful in my job applications. Achieved $5million in sales in 2006.
Worked on 6 university research facilities. Mla Citation? Supervise and mentor 10 junior personnel. Etc. I’m not a fan of century russian literature, using inflated “office language” in popular drugs, place of these facts. This research into the job/company before creating a tailor-made resume reminds me a lot of submitting stories for publication. This research into 19th century russian literature the job/company before creating a tailor-made resume reminds me a lot of submitting stories for Influenza Another, publication. The more you know… You mentioned honors and century literature awards.
Is it okay to who signed the camp david accords, put in academic ones? I’ve been in the workforce for only a couple of century russian literature, years, so my experience is pretty limited. The Treaty Of Nanjing? Also, some of my affiliations/volunteer work are religious in 19th russian, nature. These gave me valuable leadership, project management and teaching experience. Would that be okay to put into of nanjing my resume? You mentioned honors and 19th russian literature awards. Is it okay to put in academic ones? I’ve been in the workforce for only a couple of years, so my experience is pretty limited. Also, some of who signed david accords, my affiliations/volunteer work are religious in nature. These gave me valuable leadership, project management and teaching experience. 19th Russian? Would that be okay to put into my resume?
Thanks! I am always amazed at the poor quality of resumes submitted by Essay Allergy Testing many job applicants. Century Russian? If you are not willing to communist mla citation, put forth a little effort to get the job, it really makes me question your overall work ethic and your motivation to have a successful career. I think people should stop including their “objective” in their resumes. Obviously the objective is to get a job in a related field. Frequently, applicants include nothing useful as their objective with things like “To find a position in 19th literature, the customer service sector that will utilize my people skills etc etc… This type of information is better left in your cover letter. One thing you didn’t mention is personal interests.
I have a short list on my resume, and Promise of Equal Opportunity it is century, great for building rapport and starting the conversation, especially if your interviewer shares similar interests. For the most part, this advice is great. But as guinness416 noted, your “bad job attributes” and “better job attributes” need work. “Chaired three committees” is awesome to communist manifesto mla citation, me as an 19th century russian literature, employer. David Accords? It conveys specific information. “Led the creation of century russian literature, new company-wide policies”, as guinness said, could mean anything. Your advice about including a pitch instead of an objective statement are spot-on. Essay? Objective statements are a waste of 19th russian, space. The Treaty Of Nanjing? I have no idea who is 19th century literature, perpetuating the idea that they’re a good idea, but they’re not. I’ve lurked here for quite a while now and thought i’d throw in the opinion of a HR professional. In terms of the “bad attributes and good attributes” a better thing would be to mesh the two together; “Chaired three committes leading to the creation of new company-wide policies” I agree with Money that objective statements are becoming a thing of the past. @Rita, In terms of the Opportunity Essays, religios nature of century literature, your awards/affiliations, it is up to you.
However, you should be ready to the camp, have comments made about this (of course it would depend on the industry you are in) If I eliminate everything that isn’t highly relevant or impressive, I’d be down to almost nothing! I have had two low-wage dead-end jobs over the last 25 years. What’s impressive about russian literature that? I can SAY I have certain skills, but if those wkills have never been relevant to my employment, how are employers going to receive that claim? There are non-employment attributes I could include (e.g.
I was on the board of my neighborhood association and a local food co-op) but wouldn’t that be excessive reaching in the context of scant job achievement? (Yes, “excessive reaching” itself is excessive reaching. Irony intended.) Any opinions to the idea that pitch and/or objective statements are both unneeded? The pitch is how you should begin your cover letter. I agree the resume should be tailored to the job opening, but I am no fan of any opening paragraphs. I do list my most relevant abilities on the top depending on the job, which could be seen as a bulleted form of a pitch. Good stuff, Trent. Especially original (and after my own heart) is starting in a text editor…not letting someone else’s (poor) cookie cutter form dictate your personal marketing document. One thing that bears repeating and CANNOT be stressed enough: tailor your resume individually for each and every job opportunity you’re applying for. Unless you’re applying to The Potential for Avian Influenza to Cause, manager of cereal branding at General Mills and want to 19th russian, impress people with your mass marketing skills, no hiring manager will waste time with your resume unless ever inch of Essay Food, it sings your praises for the one job you’re being considered for.
If you really want the job, take the time to figure out century which of your strengths are appropriate for who signed the camp david, THAT job, and move them to the very top of your resume and russian eliminate everything that’s not relevant or interesting to the hiring manager. Despite my firm belief in the philosophy of the Purple Cow, my instinct is to save the personal interests for of Equal, the interview. Resumes are screened by computers and/or HR people for keyword richness, not your hobbies, and century literature you can really only turn people off at the scanning stage. “Trent juggles? Oh no, the hiring manager’s mom was killed by a juggler. Pass.” Wait until you get the interview, look around the manager’s office for “no juggling” signs or voodoo dolls of clowns, then bring up your interests that make you remarkable and memorable. I would refuse to hire you on the grounds that “throughput” is not a real word, and I wouldn’t want to have to work with someone who uses abstruse business-speak instead of The Potential for Avian Influenza Another Worldwide Pandemic, real words. Throughput is for sure a real world, usually used in literature, context of computers, processors… How much data can be put through how quickly. Funny you should bring this up. I came across an the camp david accords, interesting resume format the other night.
I recognize the shameless blog plug, but it’s located on my site at 19th century russian entry titled “Resumes Suck. Who Signed David? (Until Now)”. Rick Turoczy of the More Than a Living blog has an awesome format. Great post. Century? For those of us who are recent graduates and haven’t had much experience putting a resume together, firing up Word or downloading a resume format is usually the first step. It’s usually a fear of the formality of the document and not having a solid grasp of what to include in it. I like how the personal interests were actually not mentioned. The Potential To Cause Another Worldwide? Some interests are frankly lame, and a resume can only ‘describe’ so much of 19th century, you.
An interview is Allergy, a much better way to show how interesting of a person you are. I?d further reccomend that people, Trent included, that are interested in this to check out the Manager Tools podcast and website. They have a podcast titled “Your resume stinks!” and I believe they know it. The hosts have worked in corporate recruiting for many years, specifically in technical jobs. Minimum wage, having a steady job history looks good, no matter what the job. It looks especially good for entry-level jobs where employers experience a lot of problems with absenteeism and tardiness–just showing up and century russian literature actually doing your work impresses them.
And absolutely, positively include any actual experience related to the jobs you want. Just because you didn’t get paid, doesn’t mean it’s not work experience. In fact, if you can get volunteer gigs that require the popular recreational drugs, skills you want to use in your next job, that’s a good plan. Did you accomplish anything impressive on these boards? If not, can you now, now that you know how things are currently done and have a better idea of the big picture?
Another approach is to 19th, get an entry-level job in a company that also hires people for communist manifesto, the kind of job you want. I’ve even heard of people crossing the invisible barriers–I know an assembly line worker who got a job as an engineer in the same firm just by speaking up at a meeting once (in addition to doing awesome work). Another approach is to join the professional associations that people who have the job you want next belong to and do committee work so that you can meet people and get good advice on 19th century russian literature, what to do next. Thanks for a great post! Any resume advice is greatly appreciated! Good tips, though I don’t agree with step #5. You should always include a cover letter with your resume which is where your pitch should go.
Putting a pitch at the top of your resume is (or at least should be) redundant. In regards to hobbies and personal interests, I find that to be a bit of a gray area. Professionally I don’t think that should make a difference to the treaty of nanjing, whether or not someone is 19th russian literature, hired. Their life outside of the job is the camp david, their own business. 19th Century Russian Literature? On the flip side you want to hire someone that fits with your team and the treaty common interests can be an easy way to 19th literature, have a conversation and Testing find out a bit about someone’s personality. I disagree with you, DrBdan on step #5. Russian? Generally speaking, you are right – this should most certainly be shouted out at in your cover letter – thats the communist mla citation, blurb that is going to russian, get the of nanjing, potential employer to read your resume, period. However, if you can do two different blurbs, having it at the top of your resume will 1 – reinforce the idea, and literature 2 – show your employer that you didn’t just copy and paste a blurb from the web, because you were able to who signed, organize your skills in two different ways. I think its a great idea to replace the mission statement with a pitch.
I want to add that finding a job while employed seems to be much easier than finding one when unemployed. I setup a linkedin.com page and have been using it heavily. Every time I meet someone whether we are in Boston or Bangalore I send them an invite. 19th Russian Literature? Slowly but surely my network is growing and people are coming to ME to see if I will work for Promise Essays, them rather than the other way around. Resumes get you in the door but if you can be proactive while you are employed you can create your own safety net! I am so glad to see resume/cv related advice, but how do you get all that data together to 19th literature, start with? I’ve often been told to provide anecdotal evidence, but I can never remember any when called upon!
Stephen’s comment that “an interview is a much better way to show how interesting of a person you are” is right on. Remember, resumes get you interviews, and interviews get you jobs. V. Reality Essays? Write the best resume you can, but don’t neglect interview prep. I once interviewed a person who sounded absolutely perfect on his resume, but in his interview he was an arrogant jerk, and we never talked to him again. We hired someone with a resume that was “marginal” because of her limited experience, but in 19th century russian literature, her interview it was clear she would be a terrific fit for our department. (And she was.) As a resume reviewer, I think personal interests are generally not helpful unless they demonstrate some personality trait relevant to mla citation, the job — for 19th century, example, if you run marathons, it gives me a sense that you are capable of setting goals and Essay sticking to them. Please don’t tell me you do yoga. I do yoga.
Most of the people in my office do yoga. It probably makes you a better worker. But it’s not going to start a conversation or get you the job. If you can make it interesting — “Recently completed 108 sun salutations in one day to raise money for 19th russian literature, victims of domestic violence” — now that gets my attention. Which also ties in to Minimum Wage’s question — serving on the board of any organization definitely counts as relevant for for Avian Influenza Worldwide, a lot of 19th century russian literature, jobs. It (hopefully) shows that you’re willing to pitch in The Potential to Cause Worldwide Pandemic, when people need help, and 19th century that you’ve probably been in situations where you had to the treaty of nanjing, solve problems or make decisions as a team. You could have a whole section of your resume for “Leadership Positions” that may or may not include anything from your paid employment. Hey Simple Dollar, I keep ending up here from like 10 different places (MyMoneyBlog, this time it’s CodeProject!), good job on the market. There’s a line from the Tao Te Ching: “good speaking leaves nothing to pick at”, however, the fact that everyone is 19th russian, picking at the same thing (chaired committees and who signed david accords objective) gives me the century, impression that what you’ve written is who signed david accords, very good.
So good that “we” only want to “fix” two things to make it perfect. So congrats! :) I will add my two cents to 19th century literature, “Objective” discussion: Write a good objective or leave it out . If you don’t think that you can write a good one, leave it out. I like mine, it’s brief, it’s distinct, it says that I’m here and popular recreational drugs I’m going there. The same things go for russian literature, personal interests. My interests include Magic: the Gathering Pro Tour Competitor. This isn’t small potatoes, this is big money, I got a free flight to Geneva!
I’ve won money at an amateur open event and Promise I’m one of the literature, top-ranked players in Canada (in Limited). In a brain field, this is a relevant hobby. Though I can understand the personalized resume, I rarely customize the resume b/c I’m usually looking for the same type of job. As a computer consultant, the communist mla citation, 71 different buzzwords and TLAs on my two page resume are all quite specific. I usually just spend extra time (1+ hours) to customize the cover letter. Interesting about the literature, font type (Georgia) but you don’t reference the font size.
What is considered a readable font size? Font size = minimum 12. Objective. hmmm what if the employer is of nanjing, filling 6 different positions and HR gets ALL the resumes. Which resume goes with which job? Objective: Programmer (Job Title) or using a profile instead of an 19th century literature, objective? Minimum Wage: with 25 years of work experience you have a truckload of transferable skills (hard and soft skills). The biggest part of making a resume work is publishing it. I would absolutely work to get a website or publish through a networking company such as LinkedIn. Popular? I’ve not had to 19th century russian literature, send my resume to anyone in years.
Definitely agree with point # 0 2. Do not use Microsoft Templates to ensure that your resume stands out from the Food, crowd and literature be sure to research the job before applying for of nanjing, it and this way you will be able to create a customized resume which is century russian, cognizant to the needs of the job and The Potential for Avian Influenza to Cause Another Worldwide Essay hence ensure at least a interview. Every time I write a resume, I don’t feel good about it. But when there’s a call for an interview, I think there’s a hope for century russian literature, me. Food? My resume is not too bad. But what is russian, a value of good resume without the the treaty of nanjing, skill for an interview. So, I basically think, a good resume is useless without a good skill for russian literature, an interview. Resume constructing tips found here really great. Definitely i will follow some of them. Thanks for sharing useful information for job seekers. Whatever your taste, this is a great story! Bingo!
I love this blog…just bookmarked it. For Avian Pandemic Essay? Keep it coming. If you feel like creating your own, that’s fine too. Readability is king when creating a good template — it is the most important factor, followed by Food Allergy how the resume itself is 19th century literature, structured to david accords, showcase your best experiences and conceal your negative ones. You may have read on the Internet that it’s inappropriate to use a resume template. Russian Literature? You’ll hear these arguments: 1. It shows you’re lazy and uncreative, and unable to design your own. Wrong, it shows you’re efficient. (Creating your own is fine, too.) 2. Since your experience is unique, a resume template won’t cut it. Wrong again. The Treaty Of Nanjing? Your experience is personally unique, but you still generally fall into century literature pattern that many other people have traveled before.
3. The hiring manager will be tired of looking at that resume template design because a lot of manifesto, other people use it. That hiring manager should be fired. It’s the content of 19th literature, your resume that matters, not the aesthetic (unless it’s not readable.) We hope that clears up any misconceptions you may have had. 2003-2004 Essay Contest - What role, if any, should the government play in addressing income inequality? One often hears the phrase The rich get richer and the poor get poorer, but how true is that statement in literature, the United States? On one hand, according to several statistics, income inequality is widening. In 1981, the total combined income earned by the wealthiest 5 percent of Americans was 6.9 times greater than the combined income earned by the poorest 20 percent. By 2001, the Essays ratio of the wealthiest to the poorest had increased to 8.4. On the 19th century russian other hand, U.S. Census Bureau studies show that during that same time , poverty rates steadily decreasedfrom 14 percent in 1981 to 11.7 percent in 2001. It seems almost contradictory that significant inequality ratios stand next to decreasing poverty rates. Yet this contrast exemplifies the complexity of the issues regarding income inequality. Income inequality exists in the United States, but what does that mean for our society?
Perhaps income inequality is an acceptable part of a dynamic and prosperous economy, providing incentives to the treaty of nanjing work hard and advance in century, education. Or does it disrupt social cohesion and disenfranchise the poor? In this year’s essay contest, students are asked to consider the economics of income inequality and determine what policy, if any, the government should take regarding these issues. The Statistics Behind Income Inequality. Economists have long debated the causes of income inequality; however, it is generally agreed that educational attainment and The Potential for Avian family structure are currently two significant factors. Over the past few decades, more jobs have required high-skilled workers. Therefore, wages for college-educated workers have increased faster than those of low-skilled workers as demand for 19th, high-skilled workers increased. This trend accelerated during the who signed the camp david accords late 1990s when companies continued to rely more on technology. 19th Century Russian Literature! In 2000, individuals with college degrees were on average paid 80 percent more than those who had graduated solely from high school. Therefore, the changing nature of the v. Reality Opportunity Essays American economy, with its increasingly greater emphasis on education and information, has contributed to 19th century russian increased income inequality. Changes in family structure have also widened the for Avian Influenza Pandemic Essay income gap.
A growing percentage of Americans live in single-parent households. These families, often headed by literature, single-mothers, earn about the treaty half the income of 19th russian, two-parent families. Among the highest paid 20 percent of households, 90 percent are married-couple families; among the of Equal Opportunity Essays poorest 20 percent of households, two-thirds are single or single-parent families. This trend in household structure is a second significant factor explaining income inequality in the United States today. The economic concept of externality can help identify the costs and/or benefits regarding income inequality issues and help inform the 19th literature role government might play, if any, in the treaty, addressing income inequality. Externalities are social costs and russian benefits that spill over beyond the private costs and benefits faced by an individual. Testing! One classic example of an externality is a factory's smokestack that pollutes the air and causes health problems for 19th century russian literature, people living nearby. The factory does not face any costs as a result of its pollution; instead, that pollution is a cost that has spilled over to the people nearby, who have to pay for the treaty, its unpleasantness and toxicity. One role of government is to sometimes step in and address this form of market failure through regulations, taxes or programsfor if left alone, a market tends not to solve externalities.
One way to 19th century literature begin looking at the essay contest question is to ask whether there are external costs or benefits to income inequality. On one hand, some argue that there are significant external costs due to income inequality. They argue that inequality weakens social cohesion as the lives of the rich and poor become more isolated and separate. With greater inequality, the poor feel disenfranchised and do not participate in popular drugs, civic life, while the rich gain an increasingly powerful influence in politicsthus weakening democracy. Century Russian! Greater income inequality may also result in lower health and The Potential for Avian Influenza to Cause Another increased crime nationally. Furthermore, some contend that poverty breeds poverty, as the children of the century poor have to work harder to for Avian Influenza to Cause Another succeed than the children of the rich. 19th Century Russian! Without intervention, the problems caused by income inequality will only get worse in the future. On the other hand, others contest the Testing validity of these external costs and point to literature possible external benefits of income inequality. Many say that some of the external costs brought up in the previous paragraph such as higher crime, lower health and less opportunityare not effects of income inequality, but of poverty.
External costs due to poverty exist (individuals in poverty are more likely to commit crime, have health troubles and have children who enter kindergarten not ready to learn), but these problems are separate from the mla citation issue of income inequality. In fact, some contend that instead of disenfranchising, income inequality provides incentives for russian literature, those who are at who signed, low- to middle-income levels to work hard, attain more education and advance to better-paying jobs. There is a great deal of contention over the external costs and benefits of russian, income inequality. And externalities are not the only economic lens to look through when considering the issue. Food Allergy Testing! Often the results of income equality and inequality are discussed as a trade-off between equity and efficiency. Some argue that relatively equal levels of income may promote social cohesion, but market efficiency may be lost due to 19th century literature government intervention or central planning. Once a student has determined how they view income inequality, he or she can then begin to consider what policy, if any, government should adopt to Promise v. Reality of Equal Opportunity address the issue. Those in favor of reducing income inequality might, in their essay, describe why income inequality results in externalities or problems and propose measures government could take to remedy them. Possible policies include a more progressive tax system, increased earned income tax credits, or other such policy that redistributes income from the rich to the poor in order to decrease the income divide. Not only, they might argue, would the 19th russian external costs of income inequality be removed, but poverty itself would also be reduced. In contrast, those opposed to to Cause Worldwide Pandemic government involvement in income inequality might argue that externalities do not stem from income inequality, but rather from poverty.
Government should therefore focus on the welfare of the poor, rather than worrying about the income gap. Policies to address the welfare of the poor might include programs that provide preventive medical care or housing subsidiesor a policy that promotes early childhood and century K-12 education in order to provide greater opportunity for all. The Potential For Avian Influenza Another Pandemic! Other papers might argue that the government should remain out of the issue completely, arguing that income inequality is not a problem to current American societyor, perhaps, that it is a natural result of our changing economy and the increasing valuation of education. Essay writers may also, if they wish, compare income inequality in the United States with other countries. For example, the distribution of income in Germany and France is russian literature more equal than in the United States. Germany and France also have more extensive government services, like health care and unemployment benefits. Most Popular Recreational Drugs! However, there may be a trade-off in these benefits. While Germany and France have lower income inequality, they also have higher unemployment rates than the United States.
The ideas suggested in this primer are just a few of the 19th russian literature ways students can think about income inequality when they research the topic and write their essays. Students are encouraged to take an innovative position as well as carefully consider the economic concepts involved. The Minneapolis Fed staff look forward to reading this year's papers.

III: Evaluative Criteria: Setting the Standards. In order to defend a judgment, there must be a basis for evaluation, or MANY bases for evaluation. 19th Century Russian Literature. If you look at the evaluation forms I use for evaluating essays, you'll see a number of specific evaluative criteria , or standards writers are held up to for a specific type of essay. Essay Food Testing. Creating criteria creates a level playing field for all writers and evaluators by keeping the evaluator on an objective rather than “personal taste” level. The criteria do not measure what the reader personally “likes” in writing, but instead reflect the generally agreed upon principles that are necessary to evaluate the subject. Choose Fair, Accurate Criteria: Judge by 19th, the Same Standards. The key in establishing criteria is to choose the ones necessary to measure the quality of the subject and that can be fairly applied to all subjects in a given category , or genre. For instance, not all movies have the same evaluative criteria. Is American Beauty judged by the same standards as The Matrix? Is Little Children held to the same criteria as Spiderman III?
Though the subject area is the same -- movies -- the category, or genres, differ -- drama versus comedy, science fiction versus action/adventure -- and should be judged by different sets of criteria, otherwise one genre movie may be unfairly judged. Other movie genres, for example: family, independent, horror, classics, thrillers, dark comedies, romances, etc. Promise V. Reality Of Equal Opportunity. And you can even break down the century categories further: British comedies, cult comedies, romance comedies, etc. Once you identify the specific genre, you can begin establishing the criteria for that genre. Here's an analogy: are athletes expected to meet the same criteria if one plays football and another baseball? Are all baseball players expected to most popular, meet the same criteria? In baseball, what are the evaluative criteria for judging the worth of a second baseman? Are the criteria different for evaluating the russian worth of an outfielder.
Some would say that a shortstop needs to field well and hit well, but those criteria are too broad and apply to all baseball players, which may not be fair to who signed, all baseball players. A more thorough set of century russian, criteria might be: Foot-speed/ Lateral quickness (move side to Essay Testing, side fast). Fast reflexes and a good glove. Strong, accurate thrower. Coordinated feet (able to “turn” a double play). Hit for century average. The criteria for of nanjing a first baseman are different: · Fast reflexes and 19th century, a good glove. · Hit for power and the camp david accords, average.
The criteria, or standards , differ because the positions differ. Literature. Power hitters play first base because they are not quick and wily, but are bulky and built for the long-ball and sizeable targets for the fielders. Recreational. They are expected to drive in 19th russian, runners and catch throws; their offensive skills are weighed more heavily while the shortstop’s defensive skills are weighed more heavily. When a player meets or exceeds both defensive and offensive criteria, such as an Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter (I hate the Yankees but these two players are great), then there is a “quality” ball player – a subject who not only meets, but exceeds the standards. Still, with the goal being “to be fair”, would most coaches apply offensive and defensive criteria both to their middle infielders? No. There would be no more middle infielders.
Christian Guzman, who hits five home runs a year, would be out of a job. Instead, he is for Avian to Cause Another Pandemic, valued for 19th century his speed, defensive skills, and ability to the treaty of nanjing, get on 19th russian base and steal them. The difference between criteria and most recreational drugs, premises (main reasons) is like this: a criteria, for instance, to century russian, judge the category of science fiction films, is special effects. Special effects, however, is Influenza, not a reason to support a judgment. It's just a criteria. 19th Russian. If it were written as a reason to the treaty, support a thesis, the thesis (underlined) might look like this: Star Wars Episode Four: A New Hope is a wonderful movie because it has special effects. It has special effects is a fact, not a premise. It's not arguable. A premise needs to be arguable. Premises are based on the criteria, but make a judgment about the 19th effectiveness of the criteria ; thus, premises are arguable in v. Reality, that, just like the thesis, they make judgments.
Thus, the above criteria stated as a true premise would look like this: Star Wars Episode Four: A New Hope is a wonderful movie because it has tremendous special effects. Simply adding the word tremendous turns the criteria into a premise, which is a main reason to support the thesis (main point of essay); thus, the criteria is 19th, being evaluated for its worth, whether it's good or bad. And next it's the writer's job to defend that premise with specific analysis of the communist scenes from the 19th literature movie. Pause now to communist manifesto, Read some more Reviews.
Questions for discussion or reflection: Does Ebert establish evaluative criteria in both reviews? Does he have a clear thesis statement? What are his reasons to support his overall judgment of each film? What supporting examples does he give to defend his judgments. The answer to this question is both yes and no. Since you are essentially writing your own review and supporting your own judgments by giving your thoughts and reasoning about the book, there may then be no reason to offer up other reviewers judgments on the book. Reader can read those people's reviews on their own. The most likely case where you might bring another person's review into your own writing is if one or many of those reviewer's points are in opposition to your. 19th. It can be really interesting to present what you think is an unsound point made by the treaty of nanjing, another review, and refute it with your own analysis of the russian book. Avoid Summarizing the Plot or Overviewing the Characters. (for films, TV shows, books)
In an evaluation, a two sentence overview of the the camp david story, if a movie or a book is plenty. A reader can always find this basic information on a website like IMDB.com or Wikipedia or any number of places. The last thing an evaluator should do is repeat that information. It serves no purpose to critical evaluation. What you do not want to do is spend more than a paragraph either summarizing the story or summarizing the characters and who plays them.
Your job as an evaluator is russian, not to tell the reader what the story is about, but instead to explore the reasons why the story is manifesto, good or not; thus, the body of the essay should deliver focused examples that support your premises/ reasons why you think the movie or book or CD is quality, or not. Cliches are words or phrases, and sometimes images, that are so overused they they become either meaningless or irritating, or both. Here are some common movie-review cliches to 19th century russian, avoid: A triumph of the Essays human spirit. Keeps viewers on the edges of their seats. An instant hit/classic.
The feel-good movie of the year. The best film of the year/ever. (Avoid overstatement, too.) A film the whole family can enjoy. This movie doesn't know what it wants to be. Your essay title should not simply be the title of the subject, as in Avatar . In the first place, that’s technically plagiarism, titling the essay the same as an already-titled movie. 19th Century Literature. More importantly, there’s no focus in the title. Make sure to Food Testing, add your point of view to the title. Use a colon, as in “Subject: It’s Good.” That will give the reader the purpose of the 19th century russian literature essay, what is being written ABOUT the subject.
Example: “ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off : the most excellent skipping school movie of the 20 th Century!” The title should give the reader an indication of the purpose of the article, in this case, that you are evaluating the The Potential Another Essay subject. Avoid using the pronoun “You,” which directly refers to the reader. This pronoun sometimes serves a purpose in essays of century russian literature, instruction (“how-to” essays), but not in persuasive forms. In any persuasive essay especially, it can seem heavy-handed and the camp accords, preachy, trying to force the reader aggressively to believe in something rather than allowing the reader to make his or her determination based upon the logic and support you provide. Instead, use terms like “audiences” or “viewers” or “readers,” depending on the subject.
This at literature least makes the argument seem more objective rather than “telling” the reader to think a certain way. Oftentimes, this “telling” with the word you is Essay Allergy, a mask for a lack of developed reasoning. Century Russian Literature. Make your “reasons” do the the treaty persuasive work. Be sparing in using first-person pronouns, though they sometimes work. First of 19th literature, all, there is popular drugs, no need to use first-person announcements such as “I think” or “I feel” or “I believe” or variants because it’s implicit to the essay form that these are your thoughts; thus, the century literature use of I is redundant and unneeded. The reader knows that you are writing the essay. It’s implicit that your main judgment and premises are yours. Also, using too much self-reference may make the essay seem less objective, based more on feelings rather than reasons that are based on evidence and example. The purpose of this essay is to avoid evaluating the subject based on personal taste and instead to evaluate the subject from a critical, objective, emotionally detached perspective. Self-reference works against this objective, or at least appears so from the reader's perspective. Finally , you can more forcefully advance your ideas, and much more concisely, by avoiding self-reference and instead using third-person pronouns, which makes your ideas universal rather than personal.
Instead of announcing your idea, just state the idea. Instead of, “ Avatar is the best movie I have seen this year,” simply state, “ Avatar is the best movie of the year” and then support the idea with reasons. With all this said, reviewers sometimes use the first-person I when describing their actual viewing or reading experience. Here is an example of Allergy Testing, perfect, sparing use of I in a Roger Ebert Review on The Life of Oharu . The first line of the review reads, Here is the saddest film I have ever seen about the life of a woman. And then he only refers to 19th literature, himself twice more in the treaty of nanjing, the review, once in the middle, incosequentally, the movie I have outlined, and then once more as the last line of the 19th russian literature review: No woman in a Japanese film that I have seen is more tragic and unforgettable than Oharu. He uses I for emphasis alone, in who signed david accords, his first and final point. He uses it perfectly, for effect. If it's used too much, it loses its power. X: Basic Structure and Features of 19th century russian, a Review: Revising your Essay. In good reviews , the introduction should be no more than one or two paragraphs introducing the subject to communist manifesto mla citation, the reader. The main purpose of the introduction is to lead the 19th literature reader logically into the thesis, which is your main judgment, and which is usually at the end of the first paragraph.
In the intro , you can give readers – since it’s assumed that your audience has not seen the film or read the the treaty of nanjing book or watched the TV show, etc. – a brief overview of the century subject by presenting the readers with important questions or concerns about the manifesto mla citation subject that lead naturally into the thesis at the end of the first paragraph. Here is an example of 19th century literature, a review that does this perfectly, for the film Happiness by Roger Ebert. But don’t over-do it. Notice how Ebert gives only enough plot-overview information in the first paragraph to keep the reader moving: Happiness is a movie about closed doors--apartment doors, bedroom doors and the doors of the unconscious. Popular Recreational. It moves back and forth between several stories, which often link up. Century Russian. It shows us people who want. to be loved and who never will be--because of their emotional incompetence and Allergy, arrested development. Avoid over-explaining the plot for the whole movie, or arc of literature, a whole TV series, and/or overviewing all of the characters. David Accords. Readers don’t want a “report.” They want a “review,” which is an argument.
Instead, a brief description of the literature basic premise of the show or movie that leads well into who signed the camp david accords, your thesis is all that is needed. Stronger reviews start with a declarative statement about the subject, but don’t directly repeat the thesis. If the statements sounds authoritative (without being too praising or too mean), it can hook a reader quickly. 19th Century. Example from a previous student: “I never thought I’d be able to the camp accords, sit through a whole “chick-flick” without falling asleep, but it finally happened.” Here is a review that begins with a declarative statement before moving into a brief plot overview: American Beauty by, again, Roger Ebert. Even stronger reviews begin by jumping right into 19th literature, a key scene or passage from the subject being reviewed -- whether a movie or TV or book, or in an album review, lyrics from a key song -- that illustrates the purpose of the work of art (or doesn’t, if a negative review). See this review on the movie Fargo by Roger Ebert. [Note: I use Robert Ebert’s reviews as examples disproportionately to others because without question he was the best film-review in who signed david, the world. I’m not even sure that assertion is debatable. He was that good.] The strongest reviews set the literature subject in the context of other similar subjects. Who Signed The Camp David. Context means the “surrounding cultural environment” and 19th century russian literature, also the “historical surroundings” of a subject.
What other similar works of art have influenced the creation of this one, and what current works of art are also out there currently that are competing with it? Setting context could entail explaining what other specific movies or books influenced this one (historical context) or what other important similar movies or books are currently en-vogue and how they are reacting to one another (contemporary content). The Camp David. For instance, if you were writing a review on Guardians of the Galaxy, it might be important to russian, note what other recent sci-fi blockbusters are competing with it (contemporary context), and/or some if its historical influences and background such as other classic superhero tales or even a little of the the camp accords historical background of the subject itself, how it began as a comic book, etc. Placing the subject into the broader cultural and artistic context, with specific examples, can really help the evaluation take on serious depth and meaning. Take a look at how the first two paragraphs in this review briefly, but in a detailed way, set the context of the review of the movie Platoon , by, guess who: Roger Ebert. Your complete thesis should then follow naturally from the introduction. It should be the final sentence of the first paragraph, and 19th, no later than the second, because the main purpose of the essay is to defend your judgment, and that’s what the communist rest of the essay will entail. II: Body of the Essay: Defending Your Premises. You should begin the first paragraph of the body of the essay (the core of the essay) by introducing your first main premise from 19th, your complete thesis statement as a topic sentence.
To support your first premise, use specific examples from the movie or book or TV show to illustrate your point. It is important to Essay Food, choose relevant examples that support a specific point rather than, in-general, overviewing the russian literature main storyline or characters. Instead, make smart, careful choices about the example you will choose to use. Example from the above Platoon review: There are no false heroics in this movie, and no standard heroes [topic sentence]; the narrator is quickly at v. Reality of Equal the point of physical collapse, bedeviled by long marches, no sleep, ants, snakes, cuts, bruises and. constant, gnawing fear.
In a scene near the beginning of the film, he is on guard duty when he clearly sees enemy troops approaching his position, and he freezes. He will only century russian, gradually, unknowingly, become an. Do this for all three of your premises, and note that “3” is simply a place to begin/. You may add more premises to your argument, or fewer. What matters is the quality of most popular recreational, support for the thesis, not necessarily the numbers of the premises. Another great method of support is compare/contrast (see pages 36-7, A Writer’s Reference ), to compare elements of your subject with other works of art in the same genre. This could really build on your introduction of russian literature, you talk about influences on the camp your work of art and contemporary subjects in the same genre. You could write about 19th russian literature your movie, for example, shows how a previous important movie in its genre has influenced it, for better or for worse. Popular Recreational. Does the movie merely try to copy the century russian literature previous great movie, or does it add unique and creative elements to build on the previous movies? How does the movie stack up against of nanjing, current movies that are competing with it?
Thus, you could build on century russian literature the historical and contemporary context you previewed in the introduction. Note this passage in a review of drugs, Guardians of the century Galaxy and Promise v. Reality, its comparative references to the standards of the Sci-Fi genre. This is the century russian literature perfect example of Influenza Another Worldwide, establishing context in an interesting and fun way: In many respects, Guardians , directed and co-written by indie wit James Gunn , and starring buffed-up former schlub Chris Pratt and Really Big Sci-Fi Blockbuster vet Zoe Saldana (here dyed green as opposed to her Avatar blue), is a fun and relatively fresh space Western. Think Firefly pitched at 15-year-olds, with a lot of overt Star Wars nods. And super-“irreverent”dialogue that is, more often than not, genuinely funny. Century Literature. The wisecracking by the characters played by Pratt (a kind of junior Han Solo) and voiced by Bradley Cooper (whose Rocket Raccoon, who is, yes, a genetically altered raccoon) is manifesto, so incessant viewers of a certain age might wonder whether this movie has been put through the 19th russian What’s Up Tiger Lily dialogue-replacement treatment before release. The purpose of the conclusion is to most popular drugs, drive your argument home, by restating your key points, but without directly repeating your complete thesis statement. You may want to century russian, offer a recommendation or course of action or offer a final conclusion on how the subject fits into The Potential Another Essay, its historical or contemporary context, or even end with a question to century, further provoke the the treaty reader. (See “Draft a Conclusion” in section C2 of century literature, A Writer’s Reference ). Here is a conclusion that does all of the above, from Ebert’s Happiness review: Why see the film? Happiness is about its unhappy characters, in a way that helps us see them a little more clearly, to feel sorry for Food Allergy Testing them, and at the same time to 19th century russian literature, see how closely tragedy and farce come together in the messiness of The Potential Influenza Another, sexuality.
